Golden-line Acorus gramineus tolerates shade and loves moisture, easy to care for and highly ornamental
Golden-line Acorus gramineus is a perennial evergreen herb of the genus Acorus in the family Araceae, and is a variegated ornamental variety of Acorus gramineus (Japanese sweet flag). It has a low, compact growth habit, with slender sword-like leaves marked by golden-yellow or creamy-white longitudinal stripes, and the whole plant carries a faint, delicate fragrance. Because of its elegant leaf color and petite form, it is often planted together with rocks and moss, and is a common plant in traditional desk-top displays and rock-attached bonsai.
For care, Golden-line Acorus gramineus prefers a warm, humid, semi-shaded environment, and is suited to a spot with ample diffused light, avoiding direct strong sunlight and overly dry air. The soil should be kept moist year-round, and it can also be grown like an aquatic plant at the water's edge or in shallow water; in summer, ensure ventilation and shade, and in winter provide some protection against the cold. Propagation is mainly by division, usually by separating the clustered plants and replanting them in spring or autumn. It grows slowly and has little need for fertilizer, so a light, diluted feed given sparingly is enough; strong fertilizer easily damages the roots.
In terms of uses, it is mainly ornamental, and can accent damp shady corners of a courtyard and the edges of water features, or be grown in a small pot in water on a desk to create an elegant atmosphere. The rhizome of the related species Acorus gramineus has long been used in traditional Chinese medicine, but home-grown Golden-line Acorus gramineus is generally kept for ornamental purposes; anyone needing it for medicinal use should consult a professional.
As for common problems, yellowing or drying leaf tips are mostly related to direct strong sunlight, dry air, or prolonged lack of water, so the plant should promptly be moved to a spot with diffused light and the ambient humidity raised. In too dim light the leaf color becomes dull and the stripes less distinct, so bright diffused light is most suitable. Overall, this plant is not difficult to care for; as long as the environment is humid and the light is soft, it can maintain a good ornamental appearance year-round.
