Cymbidium orchids are a collective term for a group of large-flowered varieties developed through artificial hybridization within the genus Cymbidium of the orchid family, and they are also commonly known abroad as cymbidiums. They were bred by hybridizing wild Cymbidium species with large flowers, and their blooms are much larger than those of the common Chinese cymbidium, Cymbidium faberi. Although the two belong to the same genus, their ornamental emphases are completely different, so do not confuse them when making a purchase.

Cymbidium orchids have tall, upright plant forms with obvious pseudobulbs at the base, and their leaves are broad, strap-shaped and thick. The flower spikes are upright or slightly arching, densely set with large blossoms in colors including red, pink, yellow, green, white and various bicolor types. The flowering period is mostly concentrated in winter and spring, and they are often displayed as Lunar New Year flowers in living rooms, lobbies and similar spaces, festive and impressive.

In terms of care, Cymbidium orchids prefer cool, humid environments and bright, indirect light, and they dislike high temperatures, stuffiness and harsh direct sun. The growing medium should be loose, airy and well draining, commonly bark, sphagnum moss and the like. Water by letting the medium dry out between waterings, and avoid waterlogging in the pot, which can cause root rot. In autumn and winter, maintain a certain day-night temperature difference and provide ample light to help flower bud differentiation; if the temperature stays constant for a long time and light is insufficient, the plant often grows only leaves and does not bloom.

After flowering, promptly cut off the spent flower spikes and reduce watering appropriately so the plant can rest and recover, making it easier to rebloom the following year. Cymbidium orchids have long flower spikes and large blooms, look great as potted specimens, and also last fairly well as cut flowers in a vase, making them one of the most popular Lunar New Year flowers and decorative plants.
