Balcony vegetable growing refers to a form of home gardening in which vegetables are cultivated in containers such as flower pots and planting boxes on one's own balcony, and in recent years it has become very popular among city residents. It does not require a large plot of land; a space of just a few square meters is enough to create a little vegetable garden, which both yields fresh vegetables and beautifies the living environment.

There are many vegetable varieties suitable for balcony growing, and generally compact types with a short growth cycle are preferable. Common choices include leafy and fruiting vegetables such as lettuce, scallions, cilantro, chili peppers and cherry tomatoes, while herbs such as mint and perilla are also very popular. A south-facing balcony gets plenty of light and is suitable for growing light-loving solanaceous fruiting vegetables; a balcony with moderate light can instead be planted with shade-tolerant leafy vegetables.

When planting, the first step is to choose good containers and soil. Flower pots or planting boxes should have drainage holes in the bottom, and loose, fertile potting soil is best. In day-to-day care, pay attention to watering and fertilizing; because water evaporates quickly in containers, they usually need more frequent watering than plants grown in the ground, but waterlogging that rots the roots should also be avoided. When light is insufficient, vegetables tend to grow leggy, so the pots can be rotated regularly to give the plants even light.

The value of balcony vegetable growing lies not only in the harvest; many people relax body and mind while tending their vegetables, and children can also use the opportunity to observe how plants grow. It should be noted that enclosed balconies have poor ventilation, so during the high temperatures of summer it is important to ventilate and cool them to prevent pests and diseases from breeding. As long as the right varieties are chosen and managed properly, a tiny balcony can likewise bring plenty of harvest enjoyment.
