Potting water lilies means growing them in containers without drainage holes, such as water vats and basins, which is very suitable for balconies, courtyards and other places with limited space. Water lilies are perennial aquatic herbaceous plants, with leaves floating on the water surface. The flowers mostly open during the day and close at night, and the flower colors are rich, giving them high ornamental value.

The choice of container and growing medium is relatively important. For the container, it is best to choose a water vat with a larger opening or a special water lily pot; the size and depth depend on the variety, as small varieties can use shallower containers, while larger varieties need wider and deeper ones. For the growing medium, pond mud or river mud can be used, or garden soil mixed with base fertilizer. Before planting, soak it with water into a muddy state to make it easier to secure the rhizomes.

When potting, place the rhizome flat or bury it at an angle in the mud, with the growing tip slightly exposed above the mud surface, then slowly add water. At the beginning, the water level should be shallow so the leaves can quickly float to the surface and receive light, and then gradually deepen it as new leaves grow. Water lilies like plenty of sunlight and should be placed in a spot with good sunshine; insufficient light easily leads to leaf growth without flowering.

For daily care, during the peak growing season you can apply fertilizer specially made for aquatic plants or slow-release fertilizer, taking care to apply small amounts more often. Usually keep the water clean, and promptly remove dead leaves and faded flowers to avoid polluting the water. In summer, high temperatures cause rapid evaporation, so remember to replenish water in time; in winter, according to the cold hardiness of the variety, appropriately deepen the water level or move them to a place protected from freezing to overwinter.
