Water Lily Cultivation Methods and Daily Care Tips
The water lily is a perennial aquatic herbaceous plant with leaves that float on the water surface and flowers that open during the day and close in the evening; flower colors include white, pink, yellow, red and many others, making it a very popular ornamental plant for courtyard ponds and large-tub water features. The first requirement for growing water lilies is ample light. It is a strongly light-loving plant, and when light is insufficient the leaves are sparse and it is difficult for it to bloom, so it should be placed in a position where it can receive long hours of direct sunlight. Water lilies like warmth; when the temperature is on the low side, growth slows and the plant gradually enters dormancy, so in cold winter regions attention must be paid to protection against freezing to prevent the rhizomes from being damaged by cold and rotting. For cultivation, pond mud or clayey soil rich in humus is preferable; bury the rhizome in the mud and then add water, keeping the water level shallow at first and gradually deepening it as new leaves grow, with the water level for mature plants best set so that the leaves can lie naturally flat on the water surface. In daily care, keep the water clean; when the water becomes turbid and foul-smelling, change it promptly. During the vigorous growth period, a special fertilizer for aquatic plants or well-rotted organic fertilizer can be added, applied by burying it in the mud to avoid directly polluting the water. Common problems with water lilies include yellowing leaves, leaf growth without flowering, and pests such as aphids. Failure to bloom is mostly related to insufficient light, too deep a water level, or a lack of nutrients, and these can be checked and improved one by one. If aphids are found, they can be removed by hand or controlled by spraying; regularly removing dead leaves and spent flowers and keeping the water surface well ventilated will keep the plant growing stronger and blooming more.
