How to Grow and Key Management Tips for Chinese Cherry Blossoms
1. Timing
The planting time for Chinese cherry blossoms is something we need to pay strict attention to, because if the timing is wrong, none of the subsequent steps can be carried out properly. Generally speaking, spring is the planting time for most plants, and Chinese cherry blossoms are no exception; besides that, we can also plant them in autumn and winter. By comparison, autumn and winter are actually more suitable for planting cherry blossoms. The specific reason is that in autumn and winter, if there is a wound during transplanting, it can heal quickly and can also grow new roots; in addition, growth in the following year will also be very fast.
2. Soil
Soil is crucial, so the acidity and alkalinity must both be well controlled. Usually the soil pH we need is between 5.5 and 6.5; in addition, it must be fertile and well drained. If you are located in the north and the soil is in an alkaline state, then we need to use some acidic substances to adjust it, and it needs to be measured again every year. If it is in an acidic environment, commonly used alkaline substances such as slaked lime can also be used to adjust it. In addition, if the groundwater level is below one meter, then to plant cherry blossoms we first need to level the ground, then pile up soil to plant the seedlings.
3. Watering
The principle of watering is the same as for most plants: water when the flower soil is dry, and water generously when you do.
4. Fertilizing
For fertilizing, a base fertilizer is needed; besides that, we also need to apply additional fertilizer, and the timing for additional fertilizer is before flowering and after flowering.
5. Pruning
Pruning is needed in the three seasons other than autumn. In winter, what is generally done is crown-shape pruning, while in spring the branches that are not needed, as well as dead branches and branches damaged by pests and diseases, should be cut off.
6. Pests and Diseases
It may suffer from diseases and pests, so we need to pay attention at all times and, when necessary, use chemicals to kill the insects.
