Dendrobium bonsai is a type of ornamental bonsai made from plants of the genus Dendrobium in the orchid family. Dendrobium is a typical epiphyte, mostly growing attached to tree trunks, rocks or dead wood, with distinct stem nodes and elegant flowers. Planting it together with rocks and weathered wood gives it both the refined air of an orchid and a touch of wild mountain charm, making it a popular choice in home gardening.

Quite a few Dendrobium species are suitable for making bonsai, with common ones including Dendrobium officinale, Dendrobium nobile and Dendrobium aphyllum. Among them, Dendrobium officinale is not only ornamental but its stems can also be used as medicinal material; Dendrobium aphyllum has graceful flowers and is especially striking when in bloom in spring. The roots of Dendrobium are aerial roots and do not depend on deep soil, so it can be placed on a balcony, in a courtyard or in a bright spot indoors, making it very flexible in form.

When caring for Dendrobium bonsai, the growing medium and light are key. For planting, it is best to choose loose, breathable materials such as bark chunks, sphagnum moss and fern roots, or it can be tied directly onto dead wood or stones to mimic its natural epiphytic state. In daily care, place it in a spot with bright, diffused light and avoid harsh direct sun; water so that the medium dries out between waterings, and when the weather is dry, spray water around it to raise humidity, and after winter begins, pay attention to keeping it warm and protected from the cold.

If you normally notice yellowing leaves or blackened roots, it is mostly related to water accumulating in the pot or light that is too strong, so the position should be adjusted in time and the drainage of the medium checked. Dendrobium is also prone to attack by scale insects, snails and the like, so the environment needs to be kept ventilated and the plant inspected regularly. Once a pot of Dendrobium bonsai is well grown, it is elegant and charming when in bloom, and some varieties also have medicinal value, so ornamental and practical uses can be combined.
