Wintersweet bonsai is an ornamental bonsai cultivated from the wintersweet plant of the Calycanthaceae family. Wintersweet, also known as waxy plum, gets its name because its petals have a waxy sheen and it mostly blooms in the twelfth lunar month. It flowers before its leaves appear, blooming in winter with waxy yellow flowers and a clear, lasting fragrance, opening just when most flowers have withered, which gives it high ornamental value. Its branches are rugged and ancient-looking, tolerant of pruning and long-lived, making it one of the important traditional materials for trunk-style bonsai.

Common cultivated varieties include Suxin wintersweet, Qingkou wintersweet and Gouya wintersweet. Suxin wintersweet has pure yellow petals with no purple stripes on the inner petals and is generally regarded as the finest; Qingkou wintersweet has larger flowers whose shape closely resembles a qingkou; Gouya wintersweet has small flowers with pointed petals and is mostly used as grafting rootstock. When making bonsai, you can choose a suitable variety according to the plant's form and your ornamental needs.

For care, wintersweet likes a sunny, well-ventilated environment and is fairly cold-tolerant and drought-tolerant, but it fears waterlogged pots above all. The potting soil should be loose, fertile, well-drained sandy loam, and watering should follow the principle of watering when dry and stopping when wet, avoiding long-term moisture that causes root rot. During the growing season, apply light fertilizer frequently, promptly remove spent flowers after blooming, and thin out overly dense branches and leggy shoots to maintain the tree's shape and promote flower bud differentiation for the coming year.

For styling, a combination of pruning and wiring is mostly used. Common forms include slanting trunk, curved trunk and cascade styles, with wiring used to give the branches a twisted, natural look. In daily management, if the leaves turn yellow, it is mostly related to overwatering, insufficient light or lack of fertilizer, and the care method should be adjusted promptly. With proper management, wintersweet bonsai can bloom year after year, adding color and fragrance to the winter courtyard.
