Jianlan orchids bloom with a delicate, lasting fragrance; understanding their variety's traits makes care easier
Jianlan orchid (Cymbidium ensifolium, the four-season orchid) is a perennial herbaceous plant of the genus Cymbidium in the orchid family, also known as the four-season orchid, named for its extensive cultivation in the Fujian area in history. It is a terrestrial orchid with relatively small pseudobulbs and several leaves growing in clumps, shaped like long swords, with jade-green, glossy leaves and an overall elegant, upright plant form.
Jianlan orchid mostly blooms in summer and autumn, and some varieties, when well cared for, can send up multiple flower spikes and bloom repeatedly, hence the alternative name four-season orchid. The flowers are often pale yellow-green, some with purple-brown markings, and the fragrance is delicate and far-reaching, making it a type among traditional Chinese orchids that offers both flowers to view and scent to enjoy. Common cultivated varieties include Tiegusu, Longyansu, and Fushan Qidie, each with its own distinctive flower form and leaf posture.
Caring for Jianlan orchid requires a warm, humid, well-ventilated semi-shaded environment, avoiding strong direct sunlight, with appropriate shading in summer. For cultivation, choose a loose, breathable, well-draining potting medium, and water according to the principle of letting the soil dry before watering again, to avoid long-term dampness in the pot causing root rot. During the peak growing season, apply light fertilizer frequently, and appropriately supplement phosphorus and potassium fertilizer near the flowering period, which helps promote abundant blooming and a fuller fragrance.
Jianlan orchid has elegant leaves and a pleasant floral fragrance, suitable for display on balconies, in courtyards, or in bright, ventilated indoor spots, and is also a common choice for many orchid enthusiasts just starting out. Compared with many delicate ornamental flowers, Jianlan orchid has strong adaptability and is relatively low-maintenance, capable of blooming year after year when the environment is suitable, and is deeply loved by flower growers.
