The golden-edge snake plant is a cultivar of the snake plant (Sansevieria trifasciata), a perennial evergreen herbaceous plant named for the golden-yellow margins along both sides of its leaves. Its leaves stand upright and straight, shaped like swords, with horizontal tiger-skin-like bands across the surface, and its compact, well-proportioned form makes it a very popular indoor foliage plant. It is native to tropical Africa and is highly adaptable, tolerating drought and shade, so it is fairly low-maintenance in everyday care.

When caring for a golden-edge snake plant, water sparingly rather than generously; keeping the potting soil wet for long periods easily causes root rot, which is also the problem beginners run into most often. For soil, choose a loose, airy sandy mix; you can blend river sand or granular material into garden soil to improve drainage. It likes a spot with plenty of light but also tolerates partial shade, and in summer you can shade it appropriately during strong sunlight to keep the leaves from being scorched. The golden-edge snake plant is not cold-hardy, so in winter move it indoors to a warm spot, reduce watering, and keep the potting soil on the drier side.

The golden-edge snake plant is usually propagated by division; you can combine this with repotting in spring, separating the offsets that sprout beside the mother plant and planting them separately. The success rate is high, and the golden-edge trait is preserved completely. Although it can also be propagated by leaf cuttings, the new plants grown from leaf cuttings often lose the golden edge, so if you want to keep the golden edge, division is the recommended method.

In everyday care, if you notice the leaves becoming soft or yellow, it is usually related to overwatering or temperatures that are too low, so you should cut back on water promptly and improve the environment. With its striking leaf color and upright posture, the golden-edge snake plant suits spots such as the living room, study, or office; it both accents the space and takes almost no effort to manage, making it one of the recognized easy-care foliage plants.
