Red maple bonsai is a foliage bonsai made from red maple. Red maple is a horticultural variety of Japanese maple (Acer palmatum) in the soapberry family Aceraceae, with palmately lobed leaves, fine dense branches, and a graceful tree form. Its leaves are mainly red year-round, becoming especially brilliant in spring and autumn, making it very popular in bonsai.

In terms of ornamental characteristics, red maple bonsai stands out for its leaf color and tree shape. The new leaves are bright, and as the seasons change, the leaf color can transition between red, purplish red, and dark red, with some varieties fading slightly in summer. Common styles include formal upright, slanting, and forest styles. Through wiring and pruning, you can create a crown shape with distinct layers and well-balanced density.

For care, red maple prefers a cool, humid environment and should be placed in a ventilated spot with diffused light. In summer, when the light is intense, it needs appropriate shading, otherwise the leaf edges tend to scorch. Water according to the principle of watering when dry and letting it dry out between waterings, keeping the potting soil moist but not waterlogged. When the air is dry, mist the leaves to increase humidity. A loose, fertile, well-drained, slightly acidic sandy loam soil is best. During the growing season, apply light fertilizer, gradually reducing it after autumn.

In routine management, also pay attention to pruning and repotting. During the dormant period, overlong branches and crossing branches can be shortened, and during the growing season, pinch back promptly to control leggy growth and keep the tree compact. Generally, repot every one or two years, combining root pruning with fresh soil. If light is insufficient, the leaf color will fade, and prolonged stuffy, damp conditions easily cause leaf drop. Maintaining ventilation and bright light is the key to growing red maple bonsai well.
