Taxus seeds need to be stratified in sand to sprout before sowing if they are to germinate successfully.
Taxus is a rare tree species under key national protection. When its seeds ripen, they are wrapped in a bright red fleshy aril that looks much like a red bean from a distance, which is how the plant got its name. The fruit usually ripens in autumn; after harvesting, remove the flesh promptly, wash and dry the seeds, and take out the clean seeds for later use. Taxus seeds have a hard shell and contain compounds that inhibit germination, so under natural conditions they sprout very slowly, which means germination must be promoted before sowing.
The common method is stratification in moist sand, letting the seeds pass through their dormant period in a cold, damp environment, and sowing once the shells have softened and some seeds have begun to show white. When sowing, choose a loose, airy, well-drained, slightly acidic soil, do not cover the seeds too deeply, keep the soil moist after sowing, and grow them in a semi-shaded spot, avoiding direct strong sunlight.
Taxus prefers a cool, humid climate. The seedling stage is especially vulnerable to scorching sun and waterlogging, so water routinely by letting the soil dry out between waterings, and provide shade and ventilation in summer. Its form is graceful and it stays evergreen all year round; once established it can be grown in a pot for display or used for courtyard landscaping, and it has high ornamental value.
It is especially important to note that the whole Taxus plant contains toxic compounds, and the seeds must not be eaten. If there are children or pets at home, keep potted plants out of their reach. Wild Taxus is a protected plant, and digging it up at will is strictly prohibited; if you want to grow it, buy seeds or seedlings through proper channels. If the seeds still fail to sprout long after sowing, it is most likely because germination was not promoted sufficiently, and you can stratify them in sand again for a period before sowing.
