How do you grow Echeveria 'Perle von Nurnberg' seeds? A full breakdown of the planting method
I. Method of operation
1. Seed collection. If the flower stalk is allowed to mature naturally, most plants will produce a lot of seeds. When its fruit is about to mature, the seeds should be collected; do not wait until it is overripe, because once too mature it will eject the seeds. Because its seeds are very small, not much bigger than dust, we can use a sieve to separate the seeds from the seed pods and other leftover material. The collected seeds do not need any treatment and can be sown directly into the soil.
2. Substrate selection. This step undoubtedly has a huge effect on the final survival rate, so we should pay attention when choosing and select carefully. For this plant, the main factors we consider are how many nutrients it contains and whether its drainage is good. However, we can also skip preparing the substrate ourselves and use seedling blocks sold in stores. When using them, though, we need to sieve out the large particles, and then they can be used just like ordinary potting soil.
3. Container selection. You can choose a small shallow pot, and if conditions allow, it is best to choose one made of plastic.
4. Actual sowing. Fill the container with substrate (or seedling blocks), and spread some coarse sand on the surface, about 6 mm thick. Note that there should be no clay in the top dressing, otherwise it will clump together when dry. Then carefully sprinkle the seeds down and give them a spray of water; this is to prevent them from sinking into the sand.
II. Points to note
When spraying water, be careful not to do it too quickly, otherwise the newly sown seeds may be washed away.
