Umbrella papyrus, also known as umbrella plant or windmill grass, is a perennial herbaceous plant in the sedge family (Cyperaceae). Its stems stand upright, with slender leaves growing in whorls at the top, resembling an open little umbrella, which is how it got its name. Its neat and distinctive plant form makes it a common choice for courtyard waterscape arrangements, and it can also be kept as an indoor foliage plant.

Umbrella papyrus prefers a warm and humid environment and has strong tolerance to water and moisture. It can be grown in soil or hydroponically, making it one of the common aquatic ornamental plants. In daily care, place it in a bright spot where it can receive plenty of indirect light; in summer, when the light is too intense, provide appropriate shade to prevent the leaves from being scorched and turning yellow. It is not cold-tolerant, so in winter it needs to be moved indoors for warmth while keeping the environment from becoming too dry.

For propagation, umbrella papyrus is commonly propagated by cuttings and division. When taking cuttings, cut a stem section with whorled leaves and let the leaf end soak in water or moist substrate. In a warm environment, new shoots will gradually sprout from the leaf axils and grow into new plants. Division is usually done together with repotting, separating the mother plant into several clumps and planting them separately. It is simple to do and has a relatively high survival rate.

Umbrella papyrus is easy to manage and has a long ornamental period. As long as there is sufficient water and suitable light, it can stay green all year round. Placed by a pond or in an indoor container, it can add a fresh and elegant touch to the environment, making it very suitable for gardening beginners to try.
