An Introduction to the Characteristics and Care Methods of Chidan Camellia
Chidan Camellia is one of the traditional precious varieties of camellia. It belongs to the genus Camellia in the family Theaceae, an evergreen shrub or small tree, and has a long history of cultivation in East China and South China. Its flower color is mainly bright red, with petals arranged neatly in layer upon layer, often opening in a hexagonal shape. The flower form is full and well-proportioned, with strong ornamental value, making it a common choice for home potted plants and courtyard landscaping.
Chidan's flowering period is mostly concentrated in late winter and early spring. A single flower stays open for a relatively long time, and when in full bloom the red is vivid and eye-catching, especially festive against the green leaves. The same plant sometimes also produces pink flowers; in horticulture this kind of variation is often called Fendan. It shares the same origin as Chidan, differing only in flower color. Its leaves are leathery and glossy, dark green, and the plant has a compact shape, so it has good ornamental value even when not in bloom.
For care, Chidan Camellia likes loose, fertile, well-drained slightly acidic soil, and dislikes heavy or alkaline soil. It likes semi-shaded conditions, so in summer it should be kept away from harsh sun exposure. In winter, keeping the potting soil slightly moist is enough; overwatering easily causes root rot. During the growing season, apply light fertilizer frequently, and after flower buds appear, thin them appropriately to avoid nutrients being spread too thin, which can lead to bud drop or uneven flowering.
In daily care, yellow leaves are mostly related to soil that is too alkaline or improper watering, so acidic water can be added appropriately or the watering frequency adjusted. When keeping it indoors in winter, pay attention to ventilation and humidity, and avoid direct blowing from heating, which can cause the leaves to dry out. As long as soil, light and water are handled well, Chidan Camellia can produce large red flowers every winter and spring. It is a classic variety well worth growing.
