The daylily (Hemerocallis) is a perennial herbaceous plant with fleshy roots belonging to the genus Hemerocallis, and in China it has long been known by the alternate name "forget-your-worries grass." Its floral meaning centers mainly on forgetting worries and curing sorrow, symbolizing the letting go of troubles and a cheerful, open state of mind. Because people in ancient times often planted daylilies in front of the hall where the mother lived, it came to be extended as a symbol of maternal love and gratitude, and is often used to express affection and respect for one's mother.

The daylily has slender, strap-shaped leaves, with flower scapes rising above the leaf clumps, and funnel-shaped flowers whose colors are mostly orange-yellow and orange-red, though there are also yellow and bicolor varieties. In horticulture, ornamental types such as the large-flowered daylily and the 'Stella de Oro' daylily are common; in addition, there is the daylily whose buds are edible, known as golden needle vegetable (Hemerocallis citrina). Each variety differs in its ornamental value and its uses.

In terms of care, the daylily is highly adaptable, liking sunlight while also tolerating a little shade, cold- and drought-tolerant, and not demanding about soil, so its day-to-day management is fairly low-effort. During the growing period, keep the soil moist, and simply cut off spent flowers promptly after blooming; propagation is mostly by division. It is suitable for flower beds, roadsides, and courtyards, and it blooms over a long period with a fine ornamental effect.

It should be noted that ornamental daylily varieties are not the same as the edible golden needle vegetable, and varieties that have not been confirmed should not be picked and eaten at will, to avoid causing discomfort. Overall, the daylily combines ornamental value with cultural symbolism; it can be used for courtyard landscaping and is also a very good entry point for learning about traditional flower culture.
