The white magnolia tree is a common fragrant-flowering tree in the south, and can be grown in pots in the north
The white magnolia tree (Michelia alba) is an evergreen tree of the Magnoliaceae family, native to the tropical and subtropical regions of Asia. It is very commonly cultivated in southern China, while in the north it is mostly grown in pots for ornamental purposes. It has an upright tree form with dense branches and leaves; its leaves are leathery and glossy, and its flowers are pure white and unadorned, with a fresh, sweet and intense fragrance, making it one of the common fragrant-flowering tree species.
Its flowers usually open in summer and autumn, and the flowering period is longer in warm regions; with proper care, it can bloom several times a year. Compared with the yellow-flowered Michelia champaca, whose flowers tend toward yellow, the white magnolia's flowers are more pure white; the two are close relatives, and their tree forms and fragrances are fairly similar, so many people easily confuse them.
As for care, the white magnolia tree likes a warm, humid environment with plenty of sunlight, and it fears both cold and waterlogging. Watering should follow the principle of watering when dry and letting it dry out between waterings; if the potting soil stays wet for a long time, the roots rot easily. When leaves turn yellow and drop, you can first check whether the potting soil is too wet. In low-temperature areas in winter, keep it warm and move the pot indoors to a spot with good light.
If you plan to plant it in a courtyard, choose a sunny spot with good drainage and give the canopy enough room to grow. Besides its ornamental value, the flowers of the white magnolia can also be used to extract essence or to scent flower tea; enjoying the flowers and their fragrance in the yard in summer is a particular pleasure.
