The red spider lily is the common name for a perennial bulbous plant of the genus Lycoris in the amaryllis family, with the scientific name Lycoris radiata, also known as manjusaka and dragon's claw flower. When it blooms, the flower stalk emerges before the leaves, and the red flowers cluster into an umbel, with the petals curling outward in a very distinctive form. Because no leaves are seen when it flowers and no flowers are seen when it grows leaves, the flower and leaf can never meet in their lifetime, and this trait has also become the cultural source of its flower language.

The flower language of the red spider lily is usually interpreted as endless longing, parting and sorrowful memories. In Buddhist culture, manjusaka is regarded as a flower of the heavenly realm and carries an auspicious meaning; in folk legend, however, it is often described as a flower growing beside graves or riverbanks and is given the sorrowful meaning of being separated by life and death and never meeting. Different colors differ slightly: red flowers are mostly associated with parting and longing, while white varieties lean more toward purity and remembrance.

As a bulbous plant, the red spider lily is fairly adaptable, preferring a semi-shaded, moist environment, and is suitable for planting in well-drained soil. During the high summer heat the bulb goes dormant, and only in late summer and early autumn does it send up a scape and bloom. Special attention should be paid to the fact that its bulb contains toxic components, so when grown at home it should be kept from being eaten by mistake, and hands should be washed promptly after contact with its sap.

Finally, it should be explained that flower language is a cultural image bestowed by people and has no scientific basis, so there is no need to pay too much attention to the sorrowful sayings when appreciating it. The red spider lily has brilliant colors and a unique flower shape, and performs well both as a garden accent and as a cut flower for viewing; only by viewing the legends rationally can its unique beauty be better appreciated.
