Historical Records of Verbena Essential Oil: The legend goes that the genus name in verbena's scientific name, 'Lippia,' was originally the name of a European doctor who was born in 1678 and was a botanist. Verbena is also known as lemon verbena. Starting in the 18th century, it added considerable charm to English gardens. On the European continent it was a very popular beverage ingredient and could also flavor spirits, while witches used its aphrodisiac properties to concoct love potions.
Its species name, Citriodora, refers precisely to its citrus-like aroma. Verbena is also an important material in dried flowers and can repel bacteria. Other plants commonly made into dried flowers together with verbena include cinnamon, clove, juniper, lemon, lavender, thyme and sandalwood. In the past, verbena was used on inflamed eyes and thrush.

Today, the main uses of verbena oil are in making soap and perfume. Because this plant has a low oil content, its price is naturally rather expensive.
