Detailed Guide to Hosta Planting Methods and Care Techniques
Hosta (Hosta plantaginea (Lam.) Aschers) is a perennial herbaceous plant of the genus Hosta in the family Asparagaceae. The leaves grow in a rosette, ovate or heart-shaped. The flower stem emerges from the leaf cluster, bearing a raceme. It blooms from summer to autumn, with flowers white as jade (there are also pale purple flowers); before opening they resemble a hairpin head, and they are fragrant.
Growing habits: Whatever flower you are planting, the first thing is to understand its growing habits, so that you can manage it conveniently later on. When choosing its soil, remember to choose soil that is relatively moist and also has good drainage. When planting it, also remember to give its soil a high-temperature sterilization. The seeds of the hosta are very small. When watering it, remember to keep its soil moist, especially in summer, when you must remember to replenish its water in time. Also, when the air is relatively dry, spray water on its leaf surfaces, and you can also spray water around it to increase the moisture in the air. You must also prevent the leaves from drying out, and when the sunlight is relatively strong, shade it, or choose to use a covering to shade it. Its cold resistance is also relatively strong.
Planting: When planting it, you must first choose its soil. When choosing its soil, choose one with relatively good drainage and also relatively good air permeability. After choosing the soil, you need to disinfect the soil. We can first crush the soil, put it into a black plastic bag, then place it under strong sunlight and sun it for a few days before potting it. The best method is to find an unused pot, put the soil into it and heat it, which can better scald all kinds of bacteria to death and also better eliminate insect eggs. After that, put the seeds into warm water; the water should not be too hot. We can put our hands in to feel it. After the seeds have soaked for half a day or a day, let the seeds fully absorb water and swell up, then scoop them out. You must also handle them differently according to the different sizes of the seeds. For particularly small seeds, use a toothpick: wet one end of the toothpick with water, then place the seeds one by one on the surface of the soil, keeping the distance between seeds at 1 cm. After placing them, cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil; do not cover them too deep, about 1 cm is enough. Then place the flower pot into water, with the water depth at one half of the flower pot. The water must not bury the seeds, because there are small holes at the bottom of the flower pot; let the water soak in through the small holes to moisten the soil. For seeds with relatively large granules, you can directly place them into the soil, with the distance between seeds at 3 cm. After placing the seeds, cover them with a layer of soil with a thickness of 2 cm, then use a watering can to wet the soil. After a few days, wet it again. When watering, do not be too forceful; prevent the seeds from being washed out by the water.
Management: During the growing period of the hosta, you need to water it. Remember that keeping the soil in a constantly moist state is best. When watering it, you must not water it too much either; otherwise, its roots will more easily rot, and the leaves will also turn yellow. In summer, remember to provide it with sufficient water. When the air is relatively dry, also spray water on its leaf surfaces every day to ensure the air has a certain humidity and prevent the leaf surfaces from drying out. When planting the hosta, remember not to put it in a place exposed directly to the sun. When planting, it is best to plant it in a place with a covering, such as where there are large trees or buildings. Do not place it in a place directly exposed to the sun. If growing it in a pot, place it indoors where there is scattered light, and also in a well-ventilated position. When November comes, remember to put it indoors to overwinter; as long as the indoor temperature does not freeze, that is enough.
