How to Grow Butterfly Ginger? Detailed Planting Methods and Tips
Butterfly ginger (Hedychium coronarium) is a freshwater herbaceous plant of the genus Hedychium in the ginger family (Zingiberaceae), growing 1-2 m tall, with a spicate inflorescence, tubular calyx, alternate leaf arrangement, long narrow leaves tapering at both ends, smooth leaf surfaces, and slightly downy undersides. It is not cold-tolerant and prefers warm winters and humid summers; it has poor drought resistance, preferring partial shade in the early growth stage and full sunlight during vigorous growth. The soil should be fertile with strong moisture retention.
Propagation Methods of Butterfly Ginger
Its flowers cannot set seed, so it is mainly propagated by division. In spring, cut sections of rhizome for propagation; these can be planted directly in pots or in the ground and will bloom in summer of the same year.
Generally, divide the plants once every 3-4 years. That is, cut out rhizome sections with buds, each about ten-plus cm long, and plant one section every 30 cm. Before planting, it is best to apply as much base fertilizer as possible; after planting, water thoroughly. After 20-30 days, they will sprout and grow. In the Lingnan region, they can be planted at any time of year.
However, the survival rate is highest in spring. If planted around "Qingming" (early April), they can bloom by "Liqiu" (early August). Flowering is most abundant in the second year, and after the third year the rhizomes begin to age, flowering gradually declines, and at that point they need to be replanted. As for home pot cultivation, it is often difficult to obtain large flowers because of limited soil, insufficient fertilizer, tall stems with many roots, and an unsuitable ecological environment. When first planting, do not water too much, to avoid rot at the cut surfaces of the rhizomes. During the growth period, the soil should be kept consistently moist. During the summer flowering period, appropriate shading can extend the blooming period. In winter, cut off the stems and branches to encourage new shoots the following year. In cold regions, dig up the rhizomes in winter and store them indoors.
Cultivation Techniques for Butterfly Ginger
1. Seedling Propagation Techniques
There are sexual and asexual propagation methods. The division propagation method also reproduces quickly. In areas where the plants can overwinter outdoors, they can be planted in all four seasons. Cut divisions from clusters of mature plants; if planted in February or March, they can bloom in July or August of the same year. Each plant can produce about 20-40 new plants over the year, with good flower quality and high yield.
However, in the Chibi area of Hubei, in practice, planting from November to March of the following year means they can bloom from June to July. They continue blooming successively until the above-ground parts wither after a heavy frost. By the second year, each mu can produce as many as 32,000 to 38,000 flower stems. Flower-producing rhizomes number about 35,000 to 40,000. Each 5 to 10 cm counts as one piece (plant).
2. Planting Season and Planting Methods
Golden butterfly ginger has strong adaptability to soil. The most suitable soil is fertile, loose, well-drained loam or sandy loam, but the soil should be kept consistently moist or located near a water source for more vigorous growth. It can be planted in spring, summer, and autumn, but planting in February or March of spring is best; divided planting can achieve high yields in the same year. In the first year, the average yield per mu is nearly 2000 stems/month; in the second year, the yield per mu can reach more than 2200 stems/month.
Before planting, deeply plow the land, apply sufficient base fertilizer, and form deep furrows and high beds. Use single-row or double-row planting, with a spacing of 50x50 cm between plants and rows, planting 2500-3000 plants per mu. If fertilizer and water management are good, they can bloom in late May of the same year. Planting one seedling or rhizome can produce about 20-40 new plants over the year, and they can bloom after growing to about 15 leaves or more.
3. Fertilization Methods
Using microbial bacterial fertilizer together with fermented organic fertilizer can achieve very good results. When used on butterfly ginger, microbial bacterial fertilizer combined with fermented organic fertilizer has effects and economic benefits superior to traditional fertilization schemes. According to the growth and development patterns of butterfly ginger, different fertilization methods and amounts should be adopted for different stages based on the amounts of water and fertilizer taken up. Fertilizer for butterfly ginger can be divided into two categories: base fertilizer and topdressing.
1. Base fertilizer: Sufficient application of base fertilizer is very important for the entire growth period of butterfly ginger. When propagating by division and hole planting, generally use 2000 kg per mu of high-quality organic fertilizer fermented with Jinbaobei fermentation additive (if using traditionally composted organic fertilizer, the amount should be 5000 kg), 2000 kg, and add 2 kg of Jinbaobei microbial bacterial fertilizer. Apply 60% when plowing the land and 40% when planting in holes. In addition, phosphate fertilizer (10 kg) and potassium fertilizer (15 kg) should be applied together.
2. Topdressing: When entering the leaf-growing stage, apply fertilizer mainly based on nitrogen, at 5 kg per mu, and add 0.1 liter (kg) of Jinbaobei seaweed microbial bacterial fertilizer, applying once every 10 days for a total of 2-3 times. When flower buds differentiate, forming buds up to the pre-flowering growth stage, apply a nitrogen-phosphorus combined fertilizer mainly based on phosphorus, at 6 kg per mu, and add 0.2 liters of Jinbaobei seaweed microbial bacterial fertilizer, once every 7 days, until the buds show color. Organic fertilizer can also be appropriately added, at 1000 kg per mu, plus 1 kg of microbial bacterial fertilizer. Application method: either hole application or flushing application.
3. Foliar spraying: Mix powdered Jinbaobei microbial agent (0.5 kg/mu) with water, take the supernatant for foliar spraying, and apply the residue to the roots. Do this on cloudy days or in the evening, spraying on the undersides of the leaves.
