Planting Methods and Technical Key Points for Mussaenda hybrida cv. Alicia
Mussaenda hybrida cv. Alicia, scientific name Mussaenda hybrida cv. Alicia, also known as pink calyx flower and pink paper fan, belongs to the Rubiaceae family and is native to tropical Africa and Asia.
Morphological Characteristics
The plant height is 1-2 m. It is robust by nature, prefers high temperatures, and is drought-tolerant. It is a semi-deciduous shrub with opposite leaves, long elliptical, entire margins, rough leaf surface, sharply pointed tips, and short petioles. The small flowers are golden yellow, cup-shaped and fused into a star shape. The flowers are small and fall quickly, so often only the sepals are seen, and the sepals are enlarged. When in full bloom, the whole plant is pink and very eye-catching. The flowering period is from summer to autumn and winter. The cymes are terminal, and it rarely sets fruit.
Propagation Methods
Cutting propagation is generally used. Cutting propagation is usually carried out at the end of February and the beginning of March, because Mussaenda hybrida cv. Alicia does not bloom during the transition period between winter and spring and is preparing to sprout new buds, which is the best time for propagation. Select healthy, pest-free branches from the previous year as cuttings. The length is generally best kept at 3-4 nodes, with a cutting length of about 15-20 cm. The upper cut of the cutting should be slightly slanted to allow drainage, but it must be 1-2 cm above the bud, not too close, otherwise the bud will lose too much water, which is not conducive to preserving the bud. The lower cut should be made flat at the lower part near the node. Then mix "Root Sun" rooting agent at 400 times dilution with yellow mud into a slurry, dip the cut end of the cutting into the slurry, and after treatment it can be inserted obliquely or straight into the seedling bed, with the insertion depth being 1/2-2/3 of the total length of the cutting. River sand can be used directly as the cutting medium. The temperature should be within the range of 25-28°C, and the environment should be ventilated and cool. After insertion, it can be transplanted into pots in 4-5 months. The management of cutting seedlings is relatively convenient. No fertilization is needed throughout the seedling period, and spraying water once a day to maintain humidity is sufficient.
Cultivation Management
Before planting in the field, in order to increase the survival rate, first transplant into flower pots for cultivation. After potting, place in a cool and ventilated place, use black shade netting to shade and cool for one week, maintain water supply, remove the netting after the seedlings in the nursery have survived, and then manage according to normal seedling management. Under normal plant growth conditions, carry out plant pruning and shaping. If used as a potted plant, it should be shaped in time to control the height. During the nursery period, healthy and sturdy branches should be selected and retained, a main trunk of suitable height should be cultivated, main branches should be evenly retained at the upper end of the main trunk, and side branches should be appropriately selected and retained on the main branches to form an even crown. If used for courtyard landscaping, generally 2-3 main trunks are selected and retained, and then 1-2 branches with good angles and balanced growth are selected and retained on each main trunk as main branches. The earlier or later the main branches are retained determines the future height of the tree body. If the configured environment requires a larger tree body, the main branches should be retained later so that the branch distance from the ground is higher; if the configured environment requires a smaller tree body, the main branches can be retained earlier. When retaining main branches, be sure that the main branches on each main trunk cannot cross each other; the second main branch should be retained opposite the first main branch, and the two main branches cannot be arranged on the same side and in the same direction. Each time you prune, select the upper branch with a larger angle as the extension branch, and appropriately shorten it to gradually expand the crown.
In spring, transplant the seedlings for final planting. At this time, the roots of Mussaenda hybrida cv. Alicia can basically wrap around the entire mud ball, making final planting easy to survive. Before final planting, first dig the holes and apply base fertilizer. Try not to break up the mud ball. Plant the mud ball level with the soil, not too deep or too shallow, and compact the mud soil to prevent the plant from lodging. In the first week after planting, water once a day, and afterward depending on whether the soil is dry or wet, in order to prevent the occurrence of "false survival" in Mussaenda hybrida cv. Alicia. After one month, ensure its survival, and then it can be watered less or not at all. In that same year, it can form a grove and bloom, becoming a beautiful scenic line. After it finishes flowering, except for the main branches and side branches, all excess branches should be pruned away, especially dry branches, diseased and pest-infested branches, leggy branches, and weak small branches, to reduce nutrient consumption. The principle of pruning is to ensure ventilation and light transmission, keep the inner canopy not empty, and provide sufficient sunlight to promote flower bud differentiation. After pruning, apply a compound fertilizer once to encourage the plant to produce sturdy branches, make the flowers larger and more numerous, and maintain a good crown.
After the crown shape of the plant has formed, in daily management, appropriately shorten branches that grow too tall. Thin out part of the overly dense branches, remove the weak and keep the strong, enhance tree vigor, and appropriately prune the remaining branches to maintain vigorous growth and ensure the number of flowers. When diseases occur, carbendazim at 800 times dilution can be used for control; the main pest is the noctuid moth, which can be controlled with phoxim at 1000 times dilution.
