What technical points are needed for spruce planting

Growing Techniques By Emily Carter 0 views
Spruce (Latin scientific name: Picea asperata Mast.), also known as Maoxian spruce, Maoxian fir, etc. It is a tree. It can reach 45 m tall and 1 m in diameter at breast height; the bark is light grayish brown or light brownish gray, splitting into irregular scales or slightly thick plates that peel off.

Spruce is a tree species endemic to China, produced in southwestern Shaanxi (Feng County), eastern Gansu (Liangdang) and the Bailong River basin and other places. It is slightly shade-tolerant and can withstand dry and cold environmental conditions, growing at elevations of 2400-3600 m. The spruce trunk is tall and straight, with few knots. The wood is slightly light and soft, with straight, uniform grain and fine texture. It is easy to process and has good resonance properties. It can be used for construction, aircraft, musical instruments (pianos, violins), boats and vehicles, furniture, utensils, boxes and cases, rotary-cut plywood and veneer, and wood fiber industrial raw materials, etc.

Propagation Methods

Dawn redwood is generally propagated by sowing and raising seedlings or by cuttings. It is best to cut 1-year-old plump branches from 1-5-year-old seedlings as cuttings, giving the highest survival rate. Hardwood cuttings are carried out in February to March; after leaf fall, the branches are cut, tied in bundles, stored in sand over winter, and inserted into the seedbed in the following spring, with misting to maintain humidity; they root in 30-40 days. Softwood cuttings are carried out in May to June; select semi-lignified branches 12-15 cm long; after insertion, they root in 20-25 days.
Dawn redwood seeds are small. It is intolerant of drought and afraid of waterlogging, so a flat site with convenient irrigation and drainage and fertile, loose sandy loam should be selected as the nursery. The sowing period is best when the soil temperature is above 12 degrees, mostly from late March to early April. During seed germination and the seedling stage, attention should be paid to frequent watering to keep the soil moist, and appropriate shading should be provided.
For seedling transplanting, small seedlings should carry more native soil, and large seedlings should carry soil balls. Before planting, sufficient base fertilizer should be applied, and after planting, water should be applied thoroughly. Keep the soil moist during the growing period. Two years after planting, fertilize once before spring sprouting, and fertilize once each in early summer and autumn. Prune appropriately during the seedling stage, and use thin bamboo to keep them upright.

Plants can only bear fruit at 30 years old, and 40-60-year-old plants enter the full fruiting period. Spring sowing in March is suitable; the optimum germination temperature is 12-20°C; germination occurs 10-15 days after sowing, with a germination rate of 8%-10%. In the same year, seedling height can reach more than 40 cm.

Watering Spruce

For newly emerged seedlings, watering should be done frequently to ensure soil temperature. During the seedling stage, spruce should not receive too much sunlight, and a shade shed should also be installed for the seedlings to avoid exposure to the scorching sun. During transplanting, spruce is suitable for transplanting with soil around the roots, because this can effectively prevent large water loss, and sufficient fertilizer should be applied in advance.

After Spruce Transplanting

After transplanting, keep the roots moist, which can reduce collision damage to spruce roots and lower the mortality rate of spruce. After 30 years of growth, a spruce can become sturdy. Spruce can also be propagated by cutting seedlings. Generally, branches are cut from vigorously growing spruce as cuttings; the cutting time is after leaf fall, and they are stored well, then inserted into the seedbed in the following spring.

Precautions

Spray water every day to keep the soil moist; rooting can occur only after one month. At the beginning, care should be taken not to expose them to the scorching sun. At the same time, ensure that there are no weeds in the seedbed, and that the soil is loose and has sufficient water. After spruce is planted, attention should also be paid to the prevention and control of various diseases and insect pests. The best method is to carry out early prevention and control according to the diseases and insect pests likely to occur in different periods, so as to be prepared.
