Detailed Guide to Lucky Bamboo Planting Methods and Techniques

Growing Techniques By Emily Carter 0 views

Lucky bamboo (scientific name: Dracaena sanderiana Sander) is a perennial evergreen small tree foliage plant of the Agavaceae family and the genus Dracaena. The plant is slender, with branches on the upper part of the upright stem. The rhizome creeps horizontally and is knotted; the stem is thick and upright, and the plant form is delicate. The leaves are alternate or nearly opposite, long lanceolate, with an obvious midrib, and the leaves are deep green. The umbel has 3-10 flowers growing in the leaf axils or opposite the upper leaves, the corolla is bell-shaped and purple. The berry is nearly spherical and black.

Methods of growing lucky bamboo in water

1. Temperature requirements: Lucky bamboo is relatively cold-tolerant, and the more suitable growth temperature is 20-28 degrees C. It can tolerate a low temperature of 2-3 degrees C, but in winter it is necessary to prevent frost, as too low a temperature will cause frost damage and lead to withering.

2. Light conditions: Lucky bamboo is a shade-loving plant with excellent shade tolerance, suitable for placement in a semi-shaded place. Never place it under strong light for exposure, otherwise it will cause the lucky bamboo to turn yellow and grow slowly.

3. Water quality requirements: When growing lucky bamboo in water, do not directly use freshly released tap water. The water should first be settled to reduce the chlorine compounds in the water, so as to ensure the normal growth of the lucky bamboo.

4. Fertilization notes: Lucky bamboo is relatively tolerant of fertilizer. Generally, compound fertilizer should be applied every 2-3 months. If grown in water, potassium dihydrogen phosphate should be added after changing the water every 2 weeks, so as to ensure its normal nutrient absorption.

5. Lucky bamboo has poor branching ability, unlike other trees and flowers, so when planting, it is best to gather multiple stems together and plant them in one pot. In this way, the ornamental effect will be much better, and the air purification ability will also be much better.

6. After rooting, a small amount of culture solution or compound fertilizer should be added in time, so as to ensure thick stems, but it should not be added too much, otherwise it will cause root burn. Generally speaking, fertilizing once a month is enough.

7. Never place lucky bamboo next to a TV or air conditioner, otherwise the edges will easily dry up, seriously affecting the ornamental effect.

8. The most suitable time for water culture in a bottle is from April to September, because roots and survival are easiest during this period.

9. Appropriately spray water on the leaves of lucky bamboo, especially in dry weather, so as to ensure its spreading and richness.

10. Change the water once every two weeks. If the water is never changed, bacteria will accumulate in the water, and then root rot will occur.

Methods of growing lucky bamboo in soil

1. Growth temperature, the same as water culture. The suitable growth temperature for lucky bamboo is 20-28 degrees C, but once winter comes, special attention must be paid. The temperature should not be too low, otherwise it is easy to cause frost damage.

2. Light requirements: suitable for a semi-shaded place, and absolutely avoid strong light exposure, otherwise the leaves will easily turn yellow.

3. Keep the potting soil moist. Lucky bamboo is relatively tolerant of waterlogging and afraid of drying out, so its potting soil must be kept moist. Too dry will cause the leaves to turn yellow. Generally speaking, water once every 2-3 days, and in winter the watering frequency can be reduced.

4. Frequently spray water on the leaves to maintain relatively high environmental humidity. Too dry will cause the leaves to dry up.

5. The most suitable planting time for potted lucky bamboo is the same as for water culture, also from April to September. This is the most suitable period for rooting.

6. In the peak growing season from May to September, granular compound fertilizer can be applied to the potting soil of lucky bamboo 2-3 times per month to keep the leaves luxuriant.
