Yucca Planting Methods and Care Points Explained in Detail

Growing Techniques By Emily Carter 0 views

Yucca (Latin scientific name: Yucca smalliana Fern.), also known as soft-leaf yucca, hairy-edged yucca, and Adam's needle, is a plant of the genus Yucca in the family Liliaceae. It is the national flower of Seychelles. Its stem is short, its leaves grow in nearly rosette-shaped clusters, and its flowers are nearly white, blooming in autumn. It is native to North America and is now widely cultivated outdoors in warm regions. Yucca flowers open at night, releasing a peculiar fragrance when they bloom to welcome the visit of the yucca moth. The moth has a slender, bendable proboscis in its mouthparts used to collect pollen.

How to grow yucca

It is propagated by division and cuttings, which are easy to establish and simple to carry out. In spring and autumn, cut off the aboveground part, remove the leaves from the base 10-15 cm section, and it can be used directly for garden planting and landscaping. The whole yucca plant can also be dug up and divided into several plants with a sharp knife for planting.

If large-scale propagation is needed, the stem-burying method can be used. First cut off the old perennial stems, strip off the leaves, cut them into 5-6 cm long stem segments, and insert them for cuttings, burying them upright with the top slightly exposed, placing them in sunlight and keeping the soil moist. In hot weather, they will take root in about two weeks and sprout young stems. After they develop a complete root system, they can be transplanted and set out.

Stem segments can also be placed in water, with the water changed frequently to keep it clean, and potted promptly after rooting.

Notes on growing yucca

(1) When propagating from root suckers, each sucker bud should retain some fleshy roots when divided for planting.

(2) For pot cultivation, use a large pot with a diameter of more than 35 cm, and the pot depth should be more than 25 cm. It is not particular about potting soil and can grow well in any.

(3) During the growing period, water after the potting soil dries. To encourage root sprouting and the emergence of flower stalks, loosen the soil and fertilize once in April to May.

(4) In autumn and winter, apply compost around the base of the plant and cut away dead leaves.
