Lotus Bamboo Planting Methods and Care Tips

Growing Techniques By Emily Carter 0 views

Lotus bamboo (Dracaena sanderiana) is suitable for water culture, pot planting, and hydroponics. Its ornamental value is extremely high, and it is one of the few greenery and decorative items that can be kept indoors for a long time. Lotus bamboo combines the meanings of "blooming flowers bring wealth and honor" and "bamboo brings peace," making it the best gift for a beauty and friends.

Light conditions for lotus bamboo: Lotus bamboo tolerates shade and fears sun exposure. Placing it in a brighter spot indoors helps the leaves carry out photosynthesis, making the leaves dark green, broad, thick, and glossy dark green; otherwise, they turn yellow and slender, losing their ornamental value. So do not expose it to the sun, especially when the sunlight is strongest, which is absolutely not allowed.
Water quality conditions for lotus bamboo: After lotus bamboo has rooted, it should not have its water changed. If it lacks water, just top it up, preferably with well water, which is generally hard to do. If using tap water, let it sit for one or two days before adding it. Do not use oily water or polluted water, as this easily causes root rot.
Fertilizing conditions for lotus bamboo: Do not add chemical fertilizer, to prevent the lucky bamboo from growing leggy and turning yellow. When topping up the water, add a few drops of nutrient solution, which helps growth and development of new leaves.
Wind and radiation conditions for lotus bamboo: It fears wind, especially dry wind. Keep it away from places where an electric fan blows. Normally spray water on the leaf surface to keep the leaves moist; keep it away from televisions, washing machines, air conditioners, and so on.
Pruning conditions for lotus bamboo: Maintain a moderate density. Too dense easily causes dry leaves and death; too sparse affects its ornamental value.

  How to grow lotus bamboo

Light: It likes a semi-shaded environment and avoids direct strong light; a suitable shading rate is 50% to 70%.

Temperature: It likes warmth. The suitable growth temperature is 20-28°C. It is not very cold-hardy, and in winter the temperature should be kept above 5°C.

Watering: It likes moisture. During the growing season, water whenever the surface of the potting soil looks somewhat dry. During dry air periods, spray water on the leaves frequently. In winter, water again after the potting soil has dried to a depth of about 2 cm.

Fertilizing: Normally apply a small amount of compound fertilizer granules with a nitrogen:phosphorus:potassium ratio of 2:1:1 to the potting soil once a month. No fertilizing is needed in winter.
