A Detailed Guide to the Planting Methods and Key Technical Points for Ranunculus
Ranunculus (gèn), scientific name: Ranunculus asiaticus (L.) Lepech., also known as Persian buttercup, celery flower, and buttercup, is a perennial herbaceous flowering plant in the family Ranunculaceae and the genus Ranunculus. The flowers are richly colored, mostly double or semi-double, and resemble peony flowers in shape but are smaller, with a flower diameter generally of 8cm~1ocm; the leaves resemble celery leaves, which is why it is often called celery flower. It is native to southeastern Europe and southwestern Asia. In 1596, the British introduced it for artificial cultivation, and it is very common in gardens and cut flowers. It is now cultivated in many countries, with more extensive cultivation in the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, France, the United States, Japan, and other countries, and many cut flower and potted varieties have been bred. China began introducing it from the Netherlands, Japan, and other countries in the 1990s, and it is cultivated in various major cities as cut flowers, potted plants, and flowers for spring flower exhibitions.
Planting Methods
Temperature: Ranunculus likes a cool, semi-shaded environment, is not tolerant of severe cold, and also fears intense heat. A mild climate is suitable for its growth. The most suitable temperature for its growth is about 20°C during the day and about 8°C at night, and the temperature difference between day and night should not be too large. In most regions of China, summers are hot and scorching, and in such a high-temperature environment it will enter a dormant period.
Water: This flower is not highly adaptable to water and is afraid of both moisture and drought. When planting, attention should be paid to good soil drainage, and watering should be appropriate, neither too wet nor too dry. Especially in the later stage, if it is too dry, it will enter dormancy, and the condition of the bulbs will also deteriorate as a result. After planting, the first watering should be sufficient, and afterward it should be watered promptly with attention to balancing the amount of water. The method for judging the amount of water is also very simple: if the surface layer of the soil is dry while the leaves of the Ranunculus remain fresh and not wilted, that is the best state.
Soil: The choice of soil is very important. The most suitable is neutral or slightly alkaline soil, and loose soil texture is conducive to drainage and aeration. If the Ranunculus is potted, it is best to cultivate it in sandy soil with a high humus content. This kind of soil is rich in nutrients and loose and breathable, which is conducive to the rooting and development of Ranunculus.
Light
This flower does not like intense sunlight, but relatively speaking it is a long-day plant, so it cannot lack sunlight either, and it grows best in a sparsely shaded environment.
Starting in spring, sunlight gradually intensifies, so reasonable shading should be carried out to avoid sunburn; however, in winter the daylight hours are short, so attention should be paid to providing sufficient sunlight to ensure light duration.
Long-term light can promote earlier flowering and promote differentiation and formation of bulbs; if the light period is short, flowering will be delayed, but it can promote an increase in lateral buds and a corresponding increase in the number of flowers. Therefore, by adjusting the length of the light period, one can control the appearance of Ranunculus and regulate how early or late the flowering period arrives.
Fertilization: When cultivating Ranunculus, urea can be mainly used for fertilization in the early growth stage, and one or two applications of potassium-containing liquid fertilizer should be carried out after the flowering period. In the later growth stage, more compound fertilizer should be used, especially in winter, when it is best to apply fertilizer containing nitrate nitrogen once a week.
Flowering Period Management: After flowering, attention should be paid to adjusting the temperature inside the greenhouse to 15°C to extend the flowering period. Spent flowers and diseased plants should be promptly sorted out and removed. Watering should be balanced, avoiding both excessive dryness and excessive moisture.
Ornamental Value
Its plant form is low and compact, its colors are brilliant, its flower stems stand upright, and its flower shape is elegant and unique; the flowers are large and beautiful in many postures; the petals are compact and many-layered and overlapping; the flower colors are rich, smooth, and gorgeous. Its ornamental flowering period is 30 days~40 days, with a unique style and distinctive charm. It is an ideal flower for spring potted ornamentation, arranging open-ground flower beds and flower borders, dotting lawns, and use in cut flower production. It is an excellent landscaping material for shaded environments, so it is suitable for planting under trees or on the north side of buildings, and is deeply welcomed by consumers. Ranunculus is an emerging flower with significant economic benefits. It has developed rapidly in China, but it is still far from meeting market demand and has broad development prospects.
