Amaranthus tricolor: Detailed Planting Methods and Precautions

Growing Techniques By Emily Carter 0 views

Amaranthus tricolor, also known as Joseph's coat, three-colored amaranth, leaf cockscomb, old age, and old youth. Latin name Amaranthus tricolor, an annual herb, stem erect, 14-45 cm tall, single or branched, covered with glandular hairs. Lower leaves opposite, upper leaves alternate, broadly ovate, oblong and lanceolate, 2-7.5 cm long, apex acute, base attenuate or semi-clasping, margin entire, leaf surface pubescent; native to tropical regions of Asia.

Amaranthus tricolor Cultivation Methods

(1) Light: Prefers a sunny, well-ventilated environment.

(2) Temperature: Not cold-tolerant, prefers high temperatures. The growing period is from late April to October.

(3) Soil: Not demanding about soil, drought-tolerant, alkali-tolerant, prefers fertile, well-drained sandy loam.

(4) Watering: After sowing and before emergence, generally no watering is needed. After transplanting seedlings, water thoroughly once, then water once every 5-7 days. Potted Amaranthus tricolor grows quickly and has high water demand, and its branches are brittle and the bracts are easily damaged later, so the traditional manual watering method is actually not suitable for it. In the early stage of management, spray irrigation or sprinkler hoses can be used; in the later stage after the bracts turn red, it is best to irrigate by drip irrigation or bottom absorption.

Amaranthus tricolor Management Methods

(1) Fertilizing: No fertilizing is needed from sowing to transplanting; after planting out, apply 1-2 times of dilute hemp residue liquid fertilizer as a top dressing.

(2) Pest and disease control: When harmed by aphids, use a 1000-fold dilution of dimethoate for control.

(3) Propagation: Amaranthus tricolor is propagated by seed, generally sown from April to June, or sown in a hotbed in late March to raise seedlings. At planting time, when seedlings are 10-15 cm tall, pot them up; the potting soil should be mainly base fertilizer. When potting up, a ball of soil must be kept around the roots, and after planting, shade for several days. During the growing period, pay attention to ventilation and light, and avoid excessive fertilizer and moisture, so as to prevent leggy growth and dull leaf color.
