The effective part of valerian is its rhizome. It has been included in the European Pharmacopoeia, the United States Pharmacopeia and others. After refining, volatile oil and extract are obtained.

Valerian essential oil components:

  1. One of the main components of valerian:

Valerian volatile oil, with a content generally of 0.5%~2%. The volatile oil contains more than 50 components, mainly monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes and their oxygen-containing derivatives, primarily including bornyl acetate, bornyl isovalerate, borneol, 1-camphene, valerenic acid, valerenal, valerianone and others.

  2. The second main component of valerian:

Valerian extract, which is extracted by a stepwise extraction method using ethanol at a certain concentration. The components of valerian extract are complex, mainly including alkaloids, iridoids, flavonoids, organic acids and others.

    1. Alkaloids: their content is between 2.0%~3.0%. Mainly including valerianine A, valerianine B, valeriamine, valerianine.

    2. Iridoids: 34 kinds of iridoid active components have been isolated from valerian, with a content between 11.0%~15.0%. Mainly including valepotriate, isovaltrate, acetoxyvalepotriate, dihydrovaltrate. Among them, valepotriate has the stronger activity.

    3. Flavonoids: quercetin, apigenin, kaempferol and others.

    4. Organic acids: their content is about 12%, mainly including: valeric acid, caffeic acid, isoferulic acid and some amino acids (Tyr, Ser, Leu, Cys, Thr) and others.
