What are the morphological characteristics or scent of marigold essential oil?

Marigold essential oil (Tagetes) is distilled from the flowers and leaves of the marigold. Its scent is sweet and fruity, somewhat similar to the scent of citrus. Marigold essential oil has a very high content of the ketone known as tagetone, so it is not a commonly used essential oil and is not suitable for blending on your own. In addition, marigold essential oil contains furanocoumarins, making it a photosensitive essential oil.

Legend

There is an amusing anecdote about the origin of the marigold.

About 500 years ago, a Spanish officer went to Mexico and accidentally discovered wild marigold flowers in the countryside. He found them very lovely, so he brought the seeds back to Europe. At the time, many people saw that they bloomed with entirely golden flowers, so they were used as offerings before the statue of the Virgin Mary.

Later, in the mid-16th century, it was first introduced to South China. At the time, people did not know its name, and because its flowers and leaves both had a foul, rank odor, they casually called it "stinking-petal chrysanthemum." Afterwards, it is said that a certain county magistrate was celebrating his 60th birthday, and the steward, in order to add to the atmosphere, placed two rows of potted flowers at the main gate. When the magistrate saw them, he was overjoyed and quickly asked, "What flower is this?" The steward answered, "Stinking-petal chrysanthemum." Unexpectedly, the magistrate misheard him and said, "Ah, it is the marigold, wonderful, wonderful!" The steward hurriedly flattered him, saying, "Yes, yes, I wish you ten thousand years of life, my lord." From then on, the name marigold spread far and wide.

The Qing dynasty book "Hua Jing" (The Mirror of Flowers) formally recorded the elegant name "marigold." In recent years, many people have adopted the marigold as the "flower of respect for the elderly," giving it to elders on "Elderly People's Day" to express the affection of the younger generation.
