How to Store Lavender Essential Oil and Its Shelf Life

How to store lavender essential oil so that its quality and efficacy remain undiminished

It is best to keep it out of the light. Lavender essential oil deteriorates after exposure to ultraviolet light and evaporates in large amounts, which can instead harm the skin. For lavender essential oil, simply avoiding ultraviolet light is enough; the light from a desk lamp should not be much of a problem.

How long can lavender essential oil be kept

The shelf life of unopened lavender essential oil is 3 years

Generally, pure unopened lavender essential oil has a shelf life of 3 years. If you do not plan to use such lavender essential oil immediately after purchase, it should be kept in a small wooden box at room temperature, but be sure to keep it in a cool place and never expose it to the sun, because essential oils are highly volatile substances, and high temperatures will accelerate evaporation and cause deterioration.

The shelf life of opened lavender essential oil is 1 year

It is best to use pure lavender essential oil within one year after opening. Pure essential oil has a high concentration and has some preservative effect in itself, but after opening lavender essential oil, you should immediately replace the cap after each use and store it in a wooden box.

The shelf life of diluted lavender essential oil is only 1 week

Pure lavender essential oil cannot be used directly for massaging large areas of skin. When using lavender essential oil for skincare, maintenance, and massage, it must first be diluted with a carrier oil before use. The shelf life of diluted lavender essential oil is greatly shortened, so it should be used up within 1 week. In daily blending, you should also note that each time you blend your own essential oil, you should mix it according to your own usage amount, so as to ensure that what you use each time is fresh, undeteriorated lavender essential oil!
