Inquiry: I am a farmer from Hezui Township, Honggu District. Recently, many flower buds and new shoots of greenhouse strawberries have become wilted and green-wilted, and there are also some brown spiderweb-like things on them. What disease is this, and how should it be treated?

Answer: This is a typical strawberry bud blight. This disease is an important disease in strawberry production, widely distributed and commonly occurring, and it occurs both in open fields and in protected cultivation.

Symptoms: This disease mainly damages flower buds, young shoots, stipules and the bases of leaf petioles. Once flower buds and new shoots are infected, they wilt and green-wilt, then die and turn dark brown; infection of stipules and petiole bases causes the stipules to hang down, and dark brown lesions form on leaves and calyxes. Leaves are reduced, fruit yield is also significantly reduced, and leaves and fruits become deformed, and later they are easily parasitized by Botrytis cinerea. The surface of diseased parts often produces sparse grayish-white to light brown spiderweb-like mycelium (the mycelium produced by gray mold is a thick gray mold layer).

Disease development pattern: The pathogen overwinters in the soil as mycelium or sclerotia with diseased residues, and can survive saprophytically in the soil for 2 to 3 years. After strawberry planting, disease is severe when low temperatures or continuous rainy days occur, and it is also severe when cold waves or long periods of high humidity occur.

Control methods: 1. Raise seedlings in disease-free soil, and choose disease-free seedlings for planting before transplanting. 2. Soil treatment for heavily diseased land. You can use 50% iprodione wettable powder or 50% carbendazim wettable powder, or 7% hymexazol wettable powder, 1.5 kg per mu, mixed with 30 to 50 kg of fine soil, and evenly broadcast into the planting holes before transplanting. 3. Manage the greenhouse and shed well, especially ventilation and dehumidification. During the low-temperature stage, watering must be done on sunny mornings, and flood irrigation must not be used; after watering, pay attention to ventilation and dehumidification. 4. After bud emergence, spray the plants with chemicals. You can spray the plants with 5% validamycin aqueous solution at 1000 times or 10% rhizoctonia-killing suspending agent at 300 times. 5. If mixed occurrence with gray mold is found, you can spray with 65% metalaxyl wettable powder at 600 times, 40% Shijiale suspending agent at 800 to 1000 times, or 50% vinclozolin wettable powder at 1200 times, or dust with metalaxyl dust at 1 kg per mu. You can also use 20% thiabendazole smoke agent at 300 g per mu for fumigation, which gives a better effect.
