The Taiwan-Japan hybrid queen greenhouse muskmelon "Kaohsiung No. 2 - Orange Queen" has sweet and delicious flesh that melts in the mouth, and is easier to grow than Japanese imports. Young farmer Su Jingwei of Changzhi Township, Pingtung County, succeeded in growing it, and the Kaohsiung District Agricultural Research and Extension Station that provided guidance held a demonstration, observation and tasting event for the new variety, attracting more than a hundred participants from farmers' associations at all levels and farmers, including Su Peng, who won the Shennong Award in 2018 for green energy and environmentally friendly pig farming.
To guide the production of safe, high-quality and delicious greenhouse muskmelons, the Kaohsiung District Agricultural Research and Extension Station held on December 27 at the Shunzai Farm of farmer Su Jingwei in Changzhi Township, Pingtung County a "Taiwan-Japan Hybrid Queen Greenhouse Muskmelon 'Kaohsiung No. 2 - Orange Queen' New Variety Demonstration, Observation and Tasting Event," letting farmers and consumers know that Taiwan can grow very high-quality and safe greenhouse muskmelons.
Station Director Dai Shunfa said that greenhouse muskmelons have eye-catching netting and sweet quality, and have become a new favorite for holiday gifts. Because the Kaohsiung-Pingtung area is uniquely blessed in winter, it has advantages in growing greenhouse muskmelons, and with suitable varieties, fertilizer management and greenhouse cultivation techniques, maximum output value can be produced during major festivals. After trial planting of muskmelon Kaohsiung No. 2 - Orange Queen in cooperation with farmers, its market value is high and the response has been quite enthusiastic.
Su Jingwei said that Kaohsiung No. 2 - Orange Queen is suitable for planting in Pingtung in two crops, spring and autumn. The fruit produced in this orchard has absolutely no pesticide residue. The fruit weighs about 1.4-1.8 kg, has a sugar content of 14 degrees or more, has obvious and eye-catching netting, and has a beautifully proportioned fruit shape. After harvest, it is placed indoors for about 7 days to ripen, and when the flesh softens it can be tasted. The delicate flesh is sweet and delicious and melts in the mouth, suitable for all ages, deeply capturing consumers' taste buds, and is worth planting by farmers.
