Introduction to the high-yield and lodging-resistant characteristics of the new rice variety Tainan 11
This station's Chiayi Branch is a specialized rice research station, dedicated to the improvement of rice breeding and cultivation techniques. The newly bred rice line Nanjingyu No. 58 was, on the morning of November 4, unanimously approved for naming as "Tainan 11" under review by the rice new variety review panel convened by the Agriculture and Food Agency of the Council of Agriculture, comprising 9 rice experts and scholars from the Agriculture and Food Agency, Taiwan University, Chung Hsing University, Chiayi University and the Asia-Pacific Food and Fertilizer Technology Center, and began propagation and promotion.
In recent years this station has bred the recommended good-quality rice varieties Taigeng No. 2, Taigeng No. 8 and Taigeng No. 17. In order to further obtain better rice quality and pest and disease resistance and other characteristics, in the 86th year of the Republic of China (1997), a breeding cross experiment was carried out using Taigengyu 69223, which has excellent grain appearance quality, disease resistance and high yield, as the female parent, and Taigeng No. 16, which has excellent eating quality, pest and disease resistance and high yield, as the male parent. The newly bred "Tainan 11" has the following excellent characteristics:
1. Good grain appearance, high head rice rate, good eating quality: Tainan 11 has good transparency, few white centers and white bellies, and a high head rice rate; its eating quality is slightly better than the recommended good-quality rice variety Taigeng No. 9 in the first crop season, and the same in the second crop season; and after 4 months of storage of the paddy, its cooked rice eating quality is also the same as Taigeng No. 9.
2. High yield and wide adaptability: In regional trial results at 6 locations in the country, Tainan 11's average paddy yield per hectare was 7,497 kg in the first crop season and 5,843 kg in the second crop season, increasing by 6.0% and 5.2% respectively compared with the high-yielding control variety Tainong No. 67.
3. Resistance to rice blast and planthopper pests and diseases: This new variety has moderate resistance to leaf and panicle rice blast, but its performance is relatively unstable in the Hualien-Taitung area, so special attention must be paid to control. It is moderately resistant to brown planthopper, resistant to small brown planthopper, and moderately resistant to white-backed planthopper.
4. Lower threshing rate: This variety's threshing rate in the first and second crop seasons was reduced by 5% and 12% respectively compared with Tainong No. 67, which can reduce losses from grain shattering during mechanical harvesting.
5. Good lodging resistance: Tainan 11 has a medium plant height, and its lodging resistance test results show that it is upright in the first crop season and upright to inclined in the second crop season, stronger than Tainong No. 67, which can ensure paddy yield and rice quality and is suitable for mechanical harvesting.
