The osmanthus tree is an ornamental flowering plant and fragrant tree native to China, evergreen all year round, blooming in autumn with fragrance spreading all around. This piece provides a comprehensive introduction to osmanthus cultivation techniques, covering growth characteristics, environmental requirements, variety selection, cutting propagation techniques, seedling management, young tree transplanting, care of young and mature trees, osmanthus harvesting and other aspects.

Osmanthus is one of the ten rare tree species in China, but osmanthus produces very few seeds, and propagating osmanthus trees has always been a challenge. The application of cutting propagation techniques for osmanthus has solved this problem, making it possible to propagate osmanthus trees in large quantities. This piece introduces osmanthus cutting propagation techniques: preparatory work before cutting, cutting methods, management during the seedling stage, and management during the mature seedling stage.

The characteristics and applications of osmanthus, the cultivation history and geographical distribution of osmanthus, the morphological features and biological and ecological characteristics of osmanthus, superior osmanthus varieties, general cultivation management and pest and disease control techniques for osmanthus, cultivation techniques for flower-harvesting, landscaping and ornamental, and potted osmanthus, transplanting techniques for large osmanthus trees, planning and construction of specialized osmanthus gardens, and osmanthus appreciation, among other content.

The osmanthus tree is loved by many for its unique fragrance and can be seen everywhere in city parks, residential communities and school campuses. It is a widely used tree species in landscaping. Below, the editor will introduce the propagation of potted osmanthus. Osmanthus generally uses cutting propagation, while single-trunk osmanthus mostly uses seed propagation, as described below:

  1. Seed collection. Osmanthus blooms from September to October, and the fruit ripens from late March to late April of the following year. When the fruit enters the ripening stage and the peel gradually turns from green to purplish-black, it can be collected. The collected fruit is piled and composted for about 3 days. After the peel softens, it is soaked in water and rubbed and washed to remove the peel and flesh, obtaining clean seeds, which are then slightly dried and stored in moist sand. Because osmanthus seeds have an after-ripening period, they generally need to be stratified in moist sand for 8 months before they will germinate.

  2. Propagation. The common method is seed propagation. Seed propagation can produce large numbers of osmanthus seedling trees, suitable for use as street trees. Sowing is commonly done in wide-row drilling, with a row spacing of 20 to 25 cm, a width of 10 to 12 cm, and 20 kg of seed sown per mu, producing 25,000 to 30,000 osmanthus seedlings per mu. Before sowing, the seed hilum should face to one side, covered with 1 to 2 cm of fine soil, then covered with a thin layer of rice straw, and watered until the soil is thoroughly wet, to prevent soil compaction and reduce water evaporation. When the seeds sprout and emerge from the soil, remove the straw promptly and place it between the rows, which can both keep the soil moist and prevent weeds from growing.
