Pyracantha, also known as “firestick fruit”, “life-saving grain”, “army-saving grain”, and “Qinling crabapple”, belongs to the Rosaceae family as an evergreen shrub and is a common tree species in the subtropics. Leaves are obovate, bright green, in compound corymbs, flowers white; pome round, ripe fruit bright red, not withering after frost, red fruits hanging on the branches until they fall in the following spring, and it is a newly developed bonsai tree species in recent years.

The reason it is called army-saving grain is that during the Three Kingdoms period, when the Han chancellor (later Emperor Wu of Wei) Cao Cao commanded a great army to campaign against Zhang Jiao, the officers and soldiers were once unbearably hungry and thirsty. After Cao Cao used the ruse of “looking at plums to quench thirst”, the officers and soldiers had no grain to eat, and just then they came upon a stretch of pyracantha woodland. After some hungry soldiers picked and ate the fruit and found it quite good, the whole army used it to fill their stomachs, saving the entire army, so it was called “army-saving grain”.

  Watering a pyracantha bonsai:

For a newly potted pyracantha stump, water once at 8 a.m. and once at 6 p.m. every day, and each time you water, spray all the branches and trunk wet.

After new shoots grow 5cm-6cm, you can water once a day, and be careful not to let the potting soil be too wet, so as not to affect the normal growth of new roots.

After new shoots grow 8cm-10cm, the new roots have basically formed at this point, and you can water only when the soil surface in the pot is dry, and when you water, water thoroughly until water runs out of the bottom of the pot.
