Any plant needs a certain amount of nutrients to be grown well. Although wintersweet can withstand severe cold, fertilizer is something that still cannot be skimped on where it is needed. In fact, wintersweet is a flower that very much likes fertilizer. So when growing wintersweet bonsai, be careful to preferably choose fertile soil, but it should not be too fertile either, and wintersweet should be fertilized regularly every time.

Wintersweet (Chimonanthus praecox) is a fertilizer-loving flowering plant, and timely fertilization can promote flower bud differentiation and more blooming. For potted wintersweet, because the potting soil is limited, the soil should be chosen as a sandy nutrient soil with high humus content, loose texture and good aeration.

In spring, apply leaf-unfolding fertilizer twice, and from the end of June to before the onset of the dog days, apply a compound fertilizer about once every 10 days. The dog days are also the period of flower bud differentiation. It is also a period of vigorous new root growth, so apply 1 to 2 more applications of phosphorus and potassium fertilizer; at this time fertilization should be light and dilute, otherwise it is easy to burn the roots.

After the autumn turns cool, apply — one application of dry fertilizer, applying 40 grams to 60 grams of decomposed cake fertilizer powder per pot, to better plump up flower bud growth, and before and after the beginning of winter apply 1 to 2 more applications of organic liquid fertilizer to supply the nutrients needed for flowering.

Wintersweet fertilization is mainly based on phosphorus and potassium, with less nitrogen fertilizer, and the approximate ratio of phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen is 2:1:0.5. Fertilizing in this way makes wintersweet produce large flowers, many flowers and a rich fragrance.

Wintersweet likes fertilizer, and in the early stage of flower bud formation from April to June it is suitable to apply fertilizer once every 10 days. From the end of June to before the onset of the dog days, apply a diluted fertilizer solution combining nitrogen and phosphorus once a week to promote flower bud formation. During the dog days, apply it 1 to 2 times, and the fertilizer should be light. After autumn, just apply it once more. When repotting, sufficient base fertilizer can be applied at the bottom of the pot, such as bone meal, soybean cake, etc.
