How to grow mint in water? Water propagation tutorial for mint (with pictures)

When the temperature rises and the weather warms up, the mighty power within plants starts flowing too. This is the perfect time for water propagation. One pair of scissors, one cup of water, and one pot becomes two - it is just that simple. Snip a 4-5 cm stem from the mint; once it roots in water, it propagates very easily.

At present, you cannot buy water-cultured mint at flower markets, because even some flower growers do not know that mint can be grown in water. Actually, the method is very simple. If you are worried that water culture will not go well, you can choose to buy soil-cultured mint that has been growing for about one or two years or more, which will make it easier! Cut the stem from the lower part of the mint branch, preferably including a node (that is, where the leaves grow), because the roots usually emerge from that spot first!

The cut branch can be inserted directly into a bottle filled with water. Try to choose one with a wide mouth, because if some mint grows vigorously, it will continue to sprout from below. If the bottle mouth is small, just insert one or two branches per bottle! Next comes care. A friend told me that mint is made of water, and that is true! But it likes water and also likes sun!

Since these guys came along, the first thing I do every morning when I get up is refill their water. Each time, it is best to leave some space at the mouth of the cup so the lower part can breathe some air!

The mint is placed on the north balcony, because the summer sun is too harsh. Even though it likes sun, it cannot withstand blazing sunlight, so about 3 hours of soft morning light on the north balcony each day is enough to guarantee their photosynthesis for the day. It also ensures rapid root growth and prevents leggy growth!

  1. Cut healthy mint cuttings; the length of the cuttings should be about 4 or 5 cm. If you want a high survival rate, healthy and vigorous cuttings are the most important prerequisite. Diseased branches, weak branches, and pest-infested branches need not be considered.

  2. Remove the leaves from the bottom of the mint cuttings. If the leaves of the cuttings are inserted into water, the water affects the leaves' respiration and easily causes them to rot, so cleanly remove all the leaves from the bottom of the cuttings.

  3. Pour one-half to one-third of water into a glass bottle, then place the prepared mint cuttings into the water and put them in a place indoors with plenty of light.

  4. In the early stage of water culture, change the water every one or two days to keep the water clean. After the roots grow out, you can appropriately extend the water-changing interval, regularly clean the glass bottle, and prevent infection by pathogens.

Regarding mint propagation, mint can be propagated by cuttings. Just like moving from soil culture to water culture, give it enough light and water, and mint will grow very quickly. When the roots of the water-cultured mint are strong enough and the growth is tall enough, at about the stage when it has grown seven pairs of leaves, you can cut off their tops. After topping, they will send out two new shoots from the nodes below. This is the type that grows more vigorously the more you cut it!

  A small suggestion:

After the mint grows roots, everyone can choose, according to their own conditions, whether to continue water culture or transplant it into soil. If you continue water culture, you need to add an appropriate amount of hydroponic nutrient solution every month to supply the mint's normal growth. If you want soil culture, you can do it once the roots grow to two or three cm!

Someone asked whether it needs nutrient solution or anything like that. This depends on the situation. I tried adding it before, but I could not control the amount, and it easily burned the roots and leaves! So I decisively gave it up. We can talk about it later if needed!
