The five-needle pine has an upright posture and is a tree species with high ornamental value. It is suitable both for decorating gardens and as an important species for potted plants or bonsai. In bonsai making, the tree's posture must be maintained well and the growth of branches and leaves controlled, so as to achieve a shape with short, dense and vigorous branches and leaves. Today the editor will introduce the watering techniques for five-needle pine bonsai.

The roots of the five-needle pine are averse to waterlogging, and the potting soil should preferably be on the dry side, but it must not be short of water for a long time either. Therefore, water moderately, do not overwater, and frequently spray water on the leaves; only then will it grow well. If the potting soil is too wet, in mild cases the needles turn yellow, and in severe cases the roots rot and the plant dies. During the plum rain season, being rained on outdoors and having waterlogged potting soil over a long period often leads to death. How much to water depends on the following factors:

1. The five-needle pine fears waterlogged roots most of all, so water moderately and do not overwater. Spray water on the leaves frequently, and keep soil moisture between 15%-30%. Natural water is best.

2. When the weather is hot and there is a long drought, water a little more as appropriate. Water before 10 o'clock or after 16 o'clock, giving one deep watering a day. In autumn the potting soil should not be too dry either, otherwise the needles easily turn yellow. In winter, when temperatures are low, the water requirement decreases, so water less; if the potting soil is moist, you need not water. Watering should be done around noon, when the day's temperature is highest. Generally, in spring and autumn, water once a day; in summer, twice a day; in winter, once every few days. At the same time, it should be handled flexibly according to weather changes.

2. During the vigorous growth period and when young shoots sprout, water a little more as appropriate. During the dormant period, water less; in cold winter, water even less, once every 3-4 days is enough.

3. The five-needle pine likes a humid environment but fears waterlogging, so keeping the potting soil moist is enough. Water more in shallow pots and less in deep pots. To shorten the branches and leaves to a certain extent and make the form more attractive, you can appropriately restrict water during the spring and summer growing seasons. April to May is the season when the five-needle pine's new buds sprout and grow vigorously, so water should be appropriately restricted, because abundant water can make new branches shoot up and the needles elongate.

4. If the needles become soft, drooping and curled, it indicates a lack of water. The remedy is to give less water at the base, spray more water on the leaves, and move the plant to a shaded place; it can then slowly recover its growth.

Watering a five-needle pine bonsai should be done in moderation. As the gardening proverb says, "dry pine, wet cypress", which shows that the five-needle pine prefers dryness. In summer, when temperatures are high, the potting soil dries easily, so generally water once in the morning and once in the evening; the morning watering must be thorough, while in the evening it depends on how dry or moist the potting soil is. During showers, cover it promptly to keep off the rain, so as to avoid the loss of nutrients in the soil.
