Experienced growers all know that potted pothos is very easy to care for, so many people like to propagate their own cuttings. Although pothos is simple to grow, how to shorten the rooting time of cuttings has stumped quite a few people. After testing, to shorten the rooting time of pothos cuttings and make them root quickly, the choice of rooting medium matters a great deal. Charcoal powder can be used as the main rooting medium; it not only lets pothos root quickly, but also raises the survival rate and prevents root rot.

Why is that? In fact, charcoal has strong adsorption capacity and excellent water-retention and heat-preservation effects, so it can be called a natural heat- and moisture-retaining device. This provides a natural growing environment for pothos cuttings, not only promoting plant metabolism, but also speeding up the healing of the cut wounds, purifying harmful substances in the water, and even in hot weather the cuttings can still root successfully.

Of course, before using the charcoal you should crush it, then sift out the fine, even powder, rinse it with clean water and let it dry before use. The best rooting medium is a mix of charcoal and humus-rich loam.

The specific steps for fast-rooting cuttings are as follows:

  1. Dip the base of the cutting, which you have trimmed in advance, in rooting powder or indolebutyric acid; this will also help the base of the pothos cutting root quickly.

  2. As in other cutting processes, first poke small holes in the growing medium, keeping an appropriate distance between the holes so that the holes in the pot's cutting bed look fairly even, and after inserting the stems they will still be evenly spaced.

  3. Insert the prepared cuttings one by one into the small holes made above, taking care to insert the end dipped in rooting powder as the base, then firm the soil around the cuttings.

  4. Next comes care and management. Pothos cuttings have certain requirements when it comes to care and management; as long as you follow the requirements below, the cuttings will naturally root quickly and eventually survive.

  1) After the stems are inserted, keep the potting soil moist and also regulate the air humidity. The potting soil humidity should be 50%, and the air humidity should be 80-90%. You can cover the pot with a layer of plastic film.

  2) In the early stage after cuttings are taken, provide shade, maintaining 80% shade, so that direct sun exposure is avoided while diffused light is received, which helps photosynthesis and promotes rooting.

  3) After 20 days, the plants have basically rooted; at this point remove the film to increase light, but in hot summer weather you still need to provide shade and keep moisture, and when winter temperatures are too low, protect them from the cold and keep them warm. About 10 days after rooting, they can be transplanted into pots and moved to normal care.
