How to Root Daphne Cuttings in Water? Practical Tips Shared
Daphne is vibrant all year round, with lush branches and leaves, and when it blooms it is even more fragrant and delightful. If grown as a potted plant at home, it gives a feeling of spring everywhere, and it is a precious potted flowering plant. Daphne is mainly propagated by cuttings to obtain young plants, and cuttings are also divided into soil cuttings and water cuttings. In a previous article we introduced the cutting method for Daphne odora 'Aureomarginata', and today the editor will introduce the water cultivation technique for Daphne cuttings, hoping it will be helpful to everyone.

1. Material preparation
Before water cultivating Daphne, we first need to prepare a relatively large container for the cuttings, so that oxygen will be sufficient and it will be more conducive to the cuttings taking root. If long-term water cultivation is needed, you can prepare a beautiful glass container for it, and after the cuttings take root and sprout, it can be placed to the side for viewing. Of course, in addition to this, we also need to prepare plastic foam board, clean small stones, and loose soil.
2. Cutting the cuttings
For cuttings used in water cultivation, it is recommended to cut thick branches of the current year that are semi-lignified, ensuring the cut cuttings are 6-8 cm in length, and 1-2 leaves at the top need to be retained. One day before cutting the cuttings, you can make a ring cut at the cut, which can promote the wound to heal faster and better.
3. Water cultivation time
Daphne can be water cultivated all year round, but the season with the highest survival rate is summer, mostly in July, when the cuttings are relatively more mature and are more likely to take root after cutting.
4. Operation method
Step one: Split the base of the branch open from the middle, and use small stones or other things to separate the two halves of the branch.
Step two: Soak the cutting in disinfectant solution for about 10 minutes, then take it out.
Step three: According to the thickness of the base of the cutting, poke some holes of suitable size in the plastic foam, then insert more of the branch into the hole, leaving about 3-4 cm of the cutting exposed below.
Step four: Place the plastic foam together with the cutting into a container filled with clean water, the base of the cutting must be able to touch the water in the container, then place it in a sunny spot indoors.
5. Care and management
During daily care, the water in the container should be changed frequently, about once every 2-3 days. Mineral water, clean river water, or tap water that has been left standing for several days can all be used. When changing the water, if green moss or other viscous substances are found growing on the inner wall of the container, they need to be cleaned off, and only after disinfecting and sterilizing with potassium permanganate solution can clean water be added.
If high-temperature summer weather occurs, water should be added to the container in time, and at the same time water should be sprayed on the ground around the container to achieve a moisturizing effect. As long as the temperature is kept between 22-28°C, roots can grow well in at most 2 months, allowing the plant to survive smoothly.
