The parlor palm (Chamaedorea elegans) not only has high ornamental value, but can also purify harmful substances in the air. Because of its compact and delicate plant shape, it is named "parlor palm", and it can be propagated by sowing seeds. So, how do you plant parlor palm seeds? Today, the editor will explain it to everyone.

1. Obtaining Seeds

The parlor palm is a foliage plant that can bloom. Its flowering period is generally from April to May. It can be made to bear fruit through artificial pollination. After about half a year, the fruit will mature, and then it can be picked for sowing.

2. Preparing the Container

To propagate the parlor palm by sowing, choosing a suitable container as a seedling bed is crucial. It is recommended to use a wooden box to make the seedbed, with a moderate size.

3. Preparing the Substrate

Because the parlor palm likes fertile, loose, moist loam soil with good drainage, it is recommended to prepare the seedbed with leaf mold + mountain soil + humus soil + sandy soil in a ratio of 3:2:2:3.

4. Seed Treatment

Before sowing, we need to carry out the necessary treatment on the collected seeds. First, soak the seeds in warm water at 35-40°C for about 36 hours. After the seeds absorb enough water and become swollen and shiny, they can be used for sowing.

5. Sowing Process

For sowing parlor palm seeds, it is recommended to use the spot sowing method. After sowing the seeds, cover them with about 1.5 cm of soil, then water them thoroughly once with a fine-spout pot. Finally, cover the wooden box with a layer of transparent glass and place it in a warm place for care and management.

6. Care and Management

Usually keep the soil in the wooden box in a moist state, and the temperature should be kept at 22-25°C. As long as care and management are proper, barring accidents, the seeds will begin to sprout one after another after about 1 month.

7. Transplanting into Pots

When the seedlings have developed a certain amount of roots and grown 2-3 needle-like leaves, we can transplant the seedlings together with the soil ball into pots. Of course, the potting soil is best as fertile humus soil that is loose, breathable and well-draining. Place a small amount of nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium compound fertilizer at the bottom of the pot as base fertilizer, and at the same time some decomposed organic fertilizer can also be added, then sprinkle in a small amount of carbofuran, dried tobacco scraps, etc. to prevent pests.

Because the parlor palm is shade-tolerant, it can be grown as an indoor potted plant. In addition to good water and fertilizer management, special attention should also be paid to avoiding direct sunlight, while maintaining a certain temperature and air humidity. When the temperature is below 13°C in winter, it will enter a dormant state. For overwintering, the temperature must be kept above 10°C to avoid freezing damage to the plant.
