Anthurium has a long blooming period and vivid colors, with its spathe-like flower center standing out prominently. As a household potted plant, it can not only decorate a space but also regulate indoor air humidity and absorb harmful substances from the air, keeping people feeling relaxed and happy both physically and mentally.

Besides being propagated by seeding, cuttings and tissue culture, Anthurium can also be propagated by division. Today, the editor will tell you about the Anthurium division propagation method. The key technical points are as follows:

  1. Timing of Division

For the timing of Anthurium division, we need to consider two aspects: time and leaf age.

By time: The best time to divide Anthurium is in spring and autumn, because the temperature in spring and autumn is relatively mild and the weather is often cool and shady; summer and winter are not suitable for division because the temperature is too high or too low. However, if dividing in a greenhouse, it can be done in all four seasons.

By leaf age: Usually, when the daughter plants have grown 4-5 leaves, they are more suitable for division, which is more beneficial to the normal growth of both the mother plant and the daughter plants. If the daughter plants are too small, they will grow very slowly after division; if the daughter plants are too large, it will inevitably affect the vigor of the mother plant.

  2. Preparation for Division

Anthurium division requires preparation in advance, so that the division process can be more efficient and relaxed.

Preparing the soil: Before dividing Anthurium, we must first prepare the growing medium and flower pots for it. Since Anthurium likes loose and breathable soil, it is recommended to use a ratio of 2 parts peat + 1 part perlite, and then disinfect it with carbendazim.

Choosing the mother plant: Since small varieties of Anthurium have stronger sprouting ability than large varieties and are more likely to produce side shoots, division propagation is more conducive to survival. Of course, regardless of variety size, when dividing, you should choose side shoots that are robust and have aerial roots.

  3. Division Process

Although the process of Anthurium division is relatively simple, in order to improve the success rate of division and the survival rate after division, we must not only be careful but also strictly follow the operating procedure.

  1) First select the mother plant to be divided, then use your hands to separate the Anthurium daughter plants from the mother plant at a suitable position; the point of separation is where the daughter plants need to be detached from the mother plant.

  2) Be careful during division and do not cause damage to the mother plant or daughter plants. If the daughter plants cannot be easily detached from the mother plant by hand, do not pull hard; at this point, you can use a knife to assist, gently cutting the plant at a suitable position to separate the daughter plants from the mother plant.

  3) After all the daughter plants have been successfully separated from the mother plant, put all these daughter plants into a large container filled with disinfectant for disinfection. All roots need to be completely submerged in the disinfectant to ensure that all roots have been disinfected.

  4) Then take out the plants and divide these daughter plants into several portions for potting and transplanting. Note that the number of daughter plants planted together in each flower pot should not be too many; according to the size of the pot, a moderate number is sufficient.

Anthurium likes a warm, humid but well-drained growing environment. It is neither cold-resistant nor drought-resistant, and it is afraid of strong sunlight. Therefore, based on these characteristics, we can adopt appropriate care and management methods, and soon the Anthurium potted at home will become full of flowers and lush leaves.
