Rose cuttings are a fairly common propagation method for growing young plants during home container gardening, and they not only save time and effort but are also very enjoyable. Whether you have classic Chinese rose varieties or high-pressure European rose varieties, you can usually use cuttings to achieve the goal of breeding young plants. So, when is it suitable to take rose cuttings?

Roses are a flowering plant that roots fairly easily from cuttings, and they can usually be propagated by cuttings in summer and autumn, especially when healthy young shoots are cut for rooting, which gives an even higher survival rate. If you take cuttings in the open ground, it is usually more suitable to do so from May to September; but for home container cutting propagation, it is best to do it in summer or winter. However, if you take cuttings in summer, it takes only a little over 1 month, and even during the dog days of summer you can still take cuttings; while in winter, because the temperature is relatively low, the cuttings sprout somewhat slowly.

The cutting propagation method for roses is also very simple, and you can grow healthy young plants in just a few steps.

  1. You can buy some vermiculite at a flower market, or even online, to use as a cutting medium. It is original and this material is relatively affordable; if you need to propagate young plants from cuttings over the long term, you might as well buy more to keep on hand.

  2. Next, prepare a few empty plastic bottles, such as mineral water bottles, and then poke 1-2 holes in the bottom of the bottles as drainage holes. This can prevent the medium from becoming too wet due to overwatering and affecting the cutting survival rate.

  3. Go to a neighbor's potted mature rose plant and cut a few healthy branches to make into cuttings, then take the cuttings at the appropriate time.

Roses have strong sprouting ability, and the method of propagating young plants from cuttings is very practical; as long as the cutting environment is suitable, they will root quickly. As for how the cutting seedlings grow later on, that depends on how well we do our care and management work.
