A potted Rohdea japonica not only adds a touch of greenery to the indoors, especially in summer it can also bring a feeling of coolness, while at the same time giving a sense of abundant spring vitality. If we want to grow Rohdea japonica in pots, first we need to obtain seedlings. So, how do you propagate Rohdea japonica? Rohdea japonica can usually be propagated in three ways: sowing, cuttings and division. Below, the editor will briefly sort out the propagation methods of Rohdea japonica for everyone!

Potted Rohdea japonica is mainly propagated into young plants through the three methods of sowing, cuttings and division. As potted growers, we can choose a method that suits us according to our actual situation to propagate young plants.

  1. Propagation by sowing

Since it is sowing, first we have to obtain Rohdea japonica seeds that can be used for sowing. So, how do you obtain Rohdea japonica seeds? Actually, we can get them from flower markets or from the mature potted Rohdea japonica plants of neighbours. The maturity period of Rohdea japonica seeds is usually from October to November each year, during which we can harvest fully mature seeds and store them, then sow them the following year at a suitable time.

Before sowing, prepare flower pots and nutrient soil in advance, then scatter 3 seeds in each pot and cover them with a layer of fine soil. After watering, move the flower pots to a warm environment. Usually they will sprout after about one month, but during this period you need to keep the potting soil moist at the right times. When the seedlings grow to a suitable height, they can be directly potted and transplanted.

  2. Propagation by cuttings

Compared with sowing, the practice of propagating Rohdea japonica young plants by cuttings often takes less time to sprout, and is mostly carried out in spring and summer. When pruning branches and leaves in summer, we can cut robustly growing stems from mature Rohdea japonica plants to use as cuttings. It is advisable to cut the top part of the branch, about 7-10 cm in length, then cut off most of the leaves to reduce water consumption, and at the same time apply plant ash to the cut to congeal the wound and avoid infection by pathogens.

It should be noted that the sap of Rohdea japonica contains certain toxins, so it must not come into direct contact with the skin, otherwise it will irritate the skin and cause severe itching. Usually, wear [gloves] during the process of cutting stems, removing leaves and inserting cuttings. After the preparatory work is ready, directly insert the cuttings into moist sand beds or nutrient soil, then place them in a semi-shaded place.

Usually, when the temperature of the cutting environment is kept at 24-30°C, and the part of the cutting inserted into the soil is one third of the stem section, rooting, sprouting and leafing out will occur in about half a month. When new buds sprout on the cuttings and tender leaves begin to grow, we should promptly pot and transplant them. After the plants return to a normal growth state, they can enter the normal management procedure.

  3. Propagation by division

The division propagation method mainly uses the tillers at the base of the plant, which are appropriately separated and then potted separately in different flower pots. The division of Rohdea japonica is usually best carried out in conjunction with repotting, because division also easily damages the roots of the plant and affects its growth to a certain extent, so there is usually no need to deliberately divide just for the sake of division.

When carrying out division, considering that its sap contains toxins, just like with cuttings, it is recommended to wear gloves in advance. Then take the plant out of the flower pot, use a sharp blade to cut it apart from the junction of the stem base and rhizome, and likewise apply plant ash to the wound to prevent pathogens and also prevent root rot.

After separating the young plant from the mother plant and applying plant ash to the wound, place it in a cool place to air for half a day. Wait until the root wound has congealed and dried, then pot and plant it. After planting is completed, water it a little, and be careful not to water too much. If all goes well, usually after one week, the divided Rohdea japonica seedlings can return to a normal growth state.
