Yangzhou-style bonsai is one of the five major schools in the country, and its "one cun (one cun is 82.5px) three bends" crafting technique can be said to be unmatched in the world. In order to better protect this special bonsai crafting technique, the Yangzhou Bonsai Museum has recently applied to the relevant authorities for national-level intangible cultural heritage status, and the application has been accepted. Yangzhou-style bonsai has a long history, and the key to its distinctive shape, with clearly layered and strictly balanced structure, lies in its exquisite pruning and binding technique.

It is understood that it is precisely by virtue of this rigorous crafting technique that Yangzhou-style bonsai has repeatedly won gold and silver at national bonsai grand prix competitions, and in the early 1980s it was also designated as one of the five major bonsai schools in the country.

"One cun three bends" is based on the painting principle of Chinese painting that “branches are never straight for even a cun”, binding every branch in the cloud pads into fine serpentine curves, with up to 3 bends per cun at the densest points, while the leaves remain arranged in parallel, like patch after patch of clouds, hence the name “one cun three bends cloud-pad style”. This is the most unique aspect of Yangzhou-style bonsai. From the bonsai below, can you appreciate it?
