Precautions for Water Supplementation in Edible Mushrooms

The water temperature should be as consistent as possible with the temperature of the mushroom shed; do not use ice-cold water. Do not spray water on primordia or mushroom buds. It is best to use a sprayer for water supplementation, with the nozzle pointing upward to spray into the space and increase humidity. After water supplementation, if there are water droplets on the mushroom bodies, ventilate to remove them.

Water supplementation of mushroom bags is an important yield-increasing measure, mainly used for edible mushrooms with a relatively long cultivation cycle. Note the following: (1) For shiitake mushrooms (Lentinula edodes) and others, water should be supplemented once color conversion is complete and before fruiting begins, until the water content of the substrate reaches about 65%. (2) For most edible mushrooms, water supplementation is carried out during the transition period after the first or second flush; first restore the mycelium, then supplement water, and it is best to control the amount of water supplemented to 80%-90% of the original mushroom bag weight. (3) Water supplementation is not suitable when the mycelium is sparse, growth is weak, the temperature is below 5°C, or pests or diseases occur inside the substrate. (4) When supplementing water after the third flush, nutrients can also be added at the same time, commonly urea, sugar, potassium dihydrogen phosphate, etc.
