How Long Before Bonsai Shaping Wire Can Generally Be Removed?

Everyone knows that creating tree bonsai often requires the help of wire such as aluminum wire or copper wire to complete auxiliary shaping. Everyone knows that creating tree bonsai often requires the help of wire such as aluminum wire or copper wire to complete auxiliary shaping. Using wire to shape branches and trunks is a common method in the bonsai shaping process, generally following the winding process of main branches first, then secondary branches, then small branches, from bottom to top, from inside to outside, and from thick to thin. The ultimate goal is to make the form of the branches and trunks achieve the shaping effect we need. So, how long before bonsai wire can be removed?

Usually, when using wire to shape and design the branches of bonsai trees, it cannot be removed within a certain period of time. Because if removed too early, the wound branches will quickly return to their original state, naturally failing to achieve the purpose of winding and shaping, and the ornamental value of the bonsai will not be improved. We use wire to shape branches with the ultimate goal of increasing the diversity of bonsai shapes and improving the overall ornamental value of the bonsai.

After the process of winding wire around the branches that need shaping, in principle one generally needs to wait until the branches have grown in a fixed direction and taken shape before removing it. This process often takes several months, and at least one complete growing season is needed. If during this period the wire is clearly seen sinking into the bark, the wire can be removed at the opportune moment, and at this point the winding has basically taken shape.

Otherwise, if the wire is not removed in time, it will gradually sink into the branches as they continue to grow and develop. This often seriously affects or restricts the growth of the bonsai tree, and may ultimately cause the branches to dry up, the leaves to fall off, and may even endanger the life of the bonsai tree, leading to the death of the entire plant. Of course, such a result is something we need to try our utmost to avoid.

However, in the process of preparing to remove the wire, we also need to proceed cautiously and operate in accordance with proper standards. We must not directly pull it off, otherwise it will similarly cause varying degrees of damage to the branches. In mild cases, it may pull off the bark and leaves; in severe cases, it may break the branch. Whether the damage is light or heavy, it often has a certain impact on the ornamental value of the plant, and may also cause poor growth conditions in the plant. Even more, do not injure yourself when removing the wire.

It should be noted that if during the process of removing the wire you find that some parts have already sunk into the branches and are difficult to remove, then we must not forcefully pull them off alive. Instead, we should remove them gently to avoid causing too much damage to the branches. Moreover, after successfully removing the wire, in order to avoid wound infection and promote wound healing, it is recommended to apply some wound healing agent or bactericidal disinfectant to the wound left after removing the wire.
