How to choose a pot for a plum blossom bonsai, and what pot is best?
As a flowering plant with very beautiful and fragrant blooms, the plum blossom is generally suitable for growing as a potted plant, or for shaping into a bonsai with greater ornamental value. But to improve the overall ornamental value of the potted plant or bonsai, the pot must be chosen well. However, choosing a pot for a plum blossom bonsai involves considerable attention to detail, so what pot is best for the plum blossom?

When we choose pots for bonsai plants, we must consider not only aesthetics and harmony, but more importantly practicality, that is, the pot must be able to meet the plant's growth needs well, or even promote its growth to some extent. For a flowering plant like the plum blossom, it is all the more important to first base the choice on suitability for its growth and only then give appropriate consideration to visual appeal.
Although the plum blossom prefers a moist growing environment, it is also intolerant of water. It is precisely because the plum blossom cannot tolerate waterlogging that watering management must always be handled with care, avoiding root rot caused by overwatering. Especially during the flowering period, too much water can easily cause bud drop and bud loss.
Therefore, when choosing a pot for the plum blossom, the first thing to consider is that the pot material must have good breathability and drainage. Generally, purple clay pots, ceramic pots or glazed ceramic pots are best, because such pots are not only made of good material, being both breathable and draining, but can also ensure the plant's roots exchange air more smoothly, while preventing water from accumulating in the pot due to overwatering.
But in addition to choosing the right material for the plum blossom's pot, the size and depth of the pot must also be considered. Because growing a plum blossom in pots of different capacities may result in different growth states for the plant. A large, deep pot can hold relatively more soil, making it suitable for deep planting; a small, shallow pot holds relatively less soil, making it suitable for shallow planting.
Through observation of the roots of field-grown plum blossoms, we found that the plum blossom's root system is usually quite well developed, so when growing it as a potted plant, if we want it to grow well, we must use a relatively large and deep pot for deep planting. In this way, not only can the plum blossom's well-developed roots spread out freely in the pot, but the amount of soil in the pot will also be greater, with relatively more nutrients, so the plant will naturally grow much better.
As for the choice of the pot's shape and appearance, we can decide according to the style of the plum blossom bonsai we are creating. If the plum blossom bonsai has a slanting-trunk or curved-trunk style, generally a medium-deep manger pot, round pot, square pot or hexagonal pot will all work; if the plum blossom bonsai has a cascade style, generally a tall cylindrical pot is better.
Therefore we reach this conclusion: as for what pot is best for the plum blossom, in terms of material, purple clay pots, ceramic pots or glazed ceramic pots are best; but in terms of bonsai styling, the pot often needs to be matched scientifically according to one's own styling needs. Only in this way can we both grow the plum blossom bonsai well and give it relatively high overall ornamental value.
