Water culture is a new soilless cultivation method for plants. Water-cultured plants such as pothos, which once existed only in laboratories or enterprises, have gradually entered countless homes. How do you grow pothos in water? Compared with soil culture, the water culture method for pothos has many details that everyone needs to pay attention to. If it is not cared for well, yellowing leaves and soft, rotting roots and stems easily occur.

First, you still need to understand the ecological habits of water-cultured pothos. Water-cultured pothos likes warm, humid environments and is extremely tolerant of shade. It can be placed in a sunny indoor spot in all four seasons; if it is in a dark place, it should be moved to a light source every half month to recover, otherwise the internodes tend to lengthen and the leaves become smaller.

Below, the editor will introduce the water culture method for pothos:

  1. Choosing a water culture container

A vase, beaker, or other transparent container (such as a glass bottle) can all be used.

  2. Choosing water

Water is the key element for water-cultured pothos. Tap water, well water, clean drinking water, etc. can be used, but they should be left to stand for one or two days before use.

  3. Choosing cuttings

It is best to choose healthy, strong pothos stems with aerial roots as the water culture material. The stem length should be 15cm~30cm, and basically the leaves of 1~2 nodes should be removed before placing them in water; you can also choose a potted plant with a good shape, wash off the soil on the roots, cut off excess old roots, and then place it in clean water, where it will also easily survive

  4. Water change cycle

In the early stage of water culture, change the water frequently, once every 2~3 days. After rooting, change it once every 7~10 days. You can buy water culture acclimation solution to disinfect and sterilize and promote root growth.

  5. Root pruning

If the roots are too long, cut them short in time to prevent nutrient loss. If the roots become rotten and sticky, they should also be cleaned in time, the rotten roots cut off, and soaked in potassium permanganate solution for disinfection before resuming care. Change the water according to the early stage of water culture.

  6. Temperature and sunlight

In winter in the north, a room temperature above 10°C allows it to overwinter safely, and only above 20°C can it grow normally. At the same time, be careful to avoid excessive temperature differences, and it must not be placed near heating equipment. Water-cultured pothos needs sufficient scattered light to make the leaves spread out and stay emerald green. It should be placed where there is enough scattered light, such as a sealed balcony with light or a spot with good indoor light.

  7. Temperature

There are several ways to increase humidity: place it near a humidifier, spray the leaves, stems, and aerial roots with a sprayer, gently wipe the leaf surfaces with a cold wet towel or toilet paper, and spray water at the place where aerial roots grow.

Key points for growing water-cultured pothos:

  1. Change the water frequently

For water-cultured pothos, because pothos has very high requirements for water quality, be sure to change the water frequently. Remember to change the water once every two to three days. After pothos grows new roots, remember to add nutrient solution to the pothos so that its leaves can be more glossy.

  2. Suitable temperature

In the north, with a room temperature above 10°C, pothos can overwinter safely, and with a room temperature above 20°C, pothos can grow normally. Generally, households have no problem reaching this temperature. What needs attention is avoiding excessive temperature differences, and also making sure the leaves do not get close to heating equipment.

  3. Tidy the roots

The roots of pothos need to be cleaned at intervals. After the root system grows long, the roots need to be trimmed. If there are rotten roots, cut them off so that the pothos can absorb nutrients better.
